The 1st Sikkim State Badminton Championships 2025 marked a significant milestone for grassroots sports in our state, providing a platform for young athletes to showcase their talent, passion, and dedication to the game. For the first time in Sikkim’s history, a championship of this scale has been organized with the specific aim of identifying promising players at the grassroots level and guiding them from an early age towards sporting excellence. This vision has now become a reality through this historic event.

This achievement would not have been possible without the unwavering commitment and teamwork of the members of the Badminton Association of Sikkim (BAS), our district badminton associations, affiliated clubs, and the many partners who worked tirelessly to make this championship a success.

We are especially grateful to Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang, Chief Patron of BAS, for his wholehearted support, constant encouragement, and esteemed presence at the finals. His guidance and belief in our mission have inspired us to take bold steps toward the development of badminton in Sikkim.

Our sincere appreciation goes to:
• All members of BAS, our technical officials, and volunteers for their hard work behind the scenes
• All members of district badminton associations and affiliated clubs for their consistent support
• Hon’ble Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, Shri Raju Basnet, along with the Secretary, Chief Engineer, and the dedicated staff of the Sports Department for their cooperation
• The Power, Forest, Police, PHE, and Health Departments for their vital assistance
• Chozang Catering for their excellent hospitality and service
• Observers for their valuable oversight during the district and inter-school events
• Members of Young Shuttlers of Sikkim (YSS) for their active role and encouragement
• School heads, teachers, and students whose enthusiasm and sportsmanship brought life to the tournament
• Our friends from the press and media for their wide coverage, helping make this event a grand success

This championship has sown seeds of ambition among our youth, motivating them to pursue excellence at the Northeast and national levels in the future. Witnessing their skill and determination has strengthened our resolve to provide every possible opportunity for their growth. BAS remains committed to developing badminton at the grassroots level so that the best talent can be identified, nurtured, and trained for future success.

In the coming years, we have planned a series of tournaments that will give our young athletes more exposure, strengthen their competitive spirit, and prepare them to shine beyond our state. We look forward to the continued support of our civil society in building a strong sports culture in Sikkim.

Once again, on behalf of BAS, I extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to making this landmark event a resounding success.

With gratitude,

Sd/-

Final Review Meeting on Ethnographic Reports of 12 Left-Out Communities Held at Samman Bhawan

Gangtok, August 2 (IPR): A high-level meeting to finalise the ethnographic reports of the 12 left-out communities of Sikkim was held today at Samman Bhawan under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister of Sikkim, Mr Prem Singh Tamang.

The reports, aimed at securing Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the concerned communities, were prepared by the Sikkim State High-Level Committee constituted by the State Government.

In his address, the Chief Minister welcomed all participants and commended the Committee for its rigorous research, extensive fieldwork, and sustained stakeholder consultations. He noted that the reports, developed after four rounds of committee meetings, in-depth field studies, and interactions with community elders, scholars, and subject experts, have reached their final stage.

The Chief Minister highlighted that, for the first time, a comprehensive ethnographic history of the 12 communities has been documented. These reports successfully fulfil all five criteria set by the 1965 Lokur Committee for inclusion in the ST list, namely, primitive traits, cultural distinctiveness, geographical isolation, economic backwardness, and shyness of contact. Additionally, they provide strong, evidence-backed responses to earlier queries raised by central ministries, including the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and the Registrar General of India.

Emphasising the State Government’s longstanding political and social commitment, the Chief Minister said that these reports reflect a unified effort to address a deeply rooted historical demand. He further added that the documentation reinforces the inclusive Sikkimese identity and underscores the principle of unity in diversity.

Further, the Chief Minister outlined the next steps in the process. These include final compilation of the reports in the prescribed format for submission to the Government of India, and a final request to all 12 community organisations to review and submit any additions or suggestions within one week. Each report will also include a formal consent letter from the respective community organisation. Following this, the State Government will initiate the procedures for seeking ST status recognition.

The Sikkim State High-Level Committee comprises distinguished national scholars, former administrators, eminent academics, and respected community leaders. As part of the consultation process, special interactions were held with state-level organisations of all 12 communities: Bhujel, Gurung, Jogi, Khas, Kirat Rai, Kirat Dewan Yakha, Majhi, Mangar, Newar, Sanyasi, Sunuwar (Mukhia), and Thami.

Concluding the meeting, the Chief Minister highlighted the profound historical and cultural importance of the reports, emphasising that they serve as a valuable contribution to preserving the rich socio-cultural legacy of Sikkim’s indigenous communities while also enhancing the tapestry of India’s national heritage.

The meeting saw the presence of Ministers and MLAs representing the 12 left-out communities, Chief Economic Advisor to the Chief Minister Dr Mahendra P Lama, Secretary of the Social Welfare Department Ms Sarika Pradhan, and senior officials from the department. Also in attendance were the nodal officers involved in the preparation of the ethnographic reports, members of EIECOs+1, and representatives from each of the 12 communities.
