The Old Gray Goose, the World’s Greatest Storyteller, was much more than a man—he was a force of nature.
His larger-than-life personality, boundless enthusiasm, and extraordinary storytelling talent made him a beloved figure in his adopted hometown of Lockport, New York. Originally from Massachusetts, Goose lived to the remarkable age of 85. He was cherished as the longtime director of Camp Kenan in Barker, New York, a familiar and welcome presence at the local YMCA for decades, and, beginning in the 1990s, an internationally admired storyteller through the recordings he created with actor, author, and producer Geoffrey Giuliano.
Over a period of many months, Giuliano produced and recorded Goose in a professional studio in Lockport, New York, capturing hundreds of hours of stories, memories, folktales, ghost stories, and original performances. The recording sessions were spirited affairs, filled with laughter, creativity, and the unmistakable magic that made Goose such a beloved storyteller. From these remarkable sessions came a series of outstanding audio productions that introduced Goose to audiences far beyond Western New York.
Among the most popular of these recordings was Goose’s celebrated Halloween collection. The program was later acquired by KRB Music for national distribution and continues to delight audiences to this day.
Several years later, Geoffrey Giuliano founded Icon Audiobooks in Bangkok. Since then, many of Goose’s original recordings have been carefully restored and reissued, allowing new generations of children—and children at heart—to discover and enjoy his timeless stories. Public libraries remain among the strongest supporters of Goose’s work, helping to preserve and share his storytelling legacy with families around the world.
Robert L. “Goose” passed away on February 14, 2018, in the small hamlet of Newfane, New York. Though he is gone, his magical stories live on, continuing to entertain, inspire, and enchant listeners of all ages.
