We had a really fun time chatting with school librarian Rick Clarke on his brilliant podcast at Harris Girls’ Academy Bromley. Me and Sheju were chuffed to be invited. We talked about our new book The Girl and the Robot, about London Parakeets, and why anyone and everyone should have a bash at writing a book - if they feel like it.
Thanks for having us, Rick. What a lovely way to spend an afternoon! To hear it, link in stories.

Why we made The Girl and the Robot
When I first read The Girl and the Robot, it reminded me of Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro. It’s touching, strange, and quietly powerful. It’s not a big, shouty book. It’s gentle. A bit odd. And that’s exactly what I liked about it.
It’s the story of a girl who meets a robot. A robot who loves numbers and perfect circles, who’s fascinated by the shape of a cookie and the beauty of equations. It’s sweet and sad and hopeful.
The story was written by Vaishak Belle and Loritta Chan, AI academics from Edinburgh University. The gorgeous illustrations are by Bhumika, whose work brings this strange little world to life with colour and warmth.
We’ve launched a Kickstarter to bring this story into the world. If you like gentle, oddball picture books, or just want to support small publishers doing something a bit different, we’d love your help.
You’ll find us at kickstarter.com if you search for The Girl and the Robot. Or the link is in our bio and in our stories

Let me know if you’d like a shorter version for Instagram or anything else tailored. You’re onto something really lovely here.

Want your kid’s bookshelf to reflect the world, not just a garden centre?
Micro-publishers like us (hello!) are where you’ll find the good stuff: inclusive, joyful, mischievous stories made with love, not spreadsheets.
Oh, and we’ve got a new one coming. It’s called The Girl and the Robot.
Crowdfunder’s just gone live. Go take a look?

Big publishers go where the money is: ducks in dungarees, bunnies with banjos.
But we? We are your local indie book nerds. We are here to make stories about Black and brown kids, q***r families, kids with hearing aids, kids who look “different”. We’re not here to tick boxes. We’re here to shake up the bookshelf.

The reason why...
In 2017, just 1% of UK kids’ books had a main character who wasn’t white. Or an animal. 1%! We love a hedgehog in trousers as much as anyone, but come on.
That’s why we started Parakeet Books, joyful stories with characters from all backgrounds. Because every child deserves to see themselves in a book (and maybe a robot or a dinosaur too).

It's been a while! We're launching a new kids book very soon and we'll be back to tell you more about it. Also very soon...

I've been in a lot of public toilets and shared spaces in my 48 years. Tons. I've never had to worry about a trans person. Have you?
I've been scared of drunk men sharing a ward with my mum. Scared of men in the street, in pubs, in my own house. But never a trans person.

Judy and Sheju of Parakeet Books

After children we realised there were few children’s books that featured people of colour or families that look like our family. So we write and make beautiful, loving, diverse stories featuring:

  • people of colour

  • girls as heroes

  • LGBT families
