Canadian Faces -- Episode 20 -- August 30, 2020
Canadian Spaces is Canada’s longest-running folk music radio show, founded by Chopper McKinnon in 1980. Tune in to CKCU on Saturday mornings from 10 to noon eastern.
And catch 'Canadian Faces' streamed to this page on Sundays from 7 to 9 pm Eastern. CKCU FM in Ottawa is the home of "Canadian Spaces", Canada's longest-running folk music radio program. Chopper McKinnon founded the show in 1980 and hosted it for 33 years. The show serves as a vital hub and sounding board for Canadian singer-songwriters. Each Saturday morning, the loyal listeners – the "Space Cadets" – are treated to live performances and relaxed interviews. Chopper believed passionately in the quality of Canadian folk music, and gave airplay and encouragement to countless artists from across the country. Listeners have always showed strong support for Canadian Spaces during CKCU's annual funding drive. The high level of donations to the show saved the entire station from bankruptcy at one point. CKCU created the Ottawa Folk Festival in 1994 in response to the immense passion and loyalty of Chopper's audience. He served as the Main Stage host at the festival for the next 15 years, and received the Helen Verger Award in 1999 for his "significant, sustained contributions to folk music in Canada". Chopper passed away on March 13, 2013. Listeners and musicians from across Canada and beyond expressed a deep, personal sense of loss on hearing of his passing. A number of songs were written in his honour, and several memorial concerts and tributes were held. "Canadian Spaces" is now hosted by Chris White with a series of co-hosts who have connections to the folk community. All CKCU shows are broadcast on 93.1 FM to a 100 km radius on, streamed at www.ckcufm.com, and available for a year in the CKCU audio archive at www.ckcufm.com/schedule. Mariposa Folk Festival
On Tuesday, July 28th at 9pm EST we'll be the first ones to share a very special new song with you here on our page as part of a cross-country online music premiere.
At a time when we miss hanging out with fellow music lovers at the Mariposa Folk Festival, we are reminded of the overwhelming effects of COVID-19 on the Canadian arts and music community. The entire industry has been devastated by the pandemic and it will be the last one able to return to work.
Looking for ways to help the music community, multi-JUNO winner Stephen Fearing called on some dear friends (Connie Kaldor, James Keelaghan, and Shari Ulrich) for a special one-time 'virtual' project. Together, this group of iconic Canadian musicians recorded a folk music classic - "Hard Times Come Again No More".
Join us at 9pm EST for this one-time-only event.
Stephen and very special guest Julian Taylor will kick off the show with a quick chat about the project before the video drops.

Pat Moore performed "Ode to Funding Drive" on Canadian Spaces on CKCU yesterday morning -- a song she made up while walking from the parking lot to the studio! Thanks, Pat -- that was an awesome contribution!
Thanks also to Mary Gick who rode her bicycle into CKCU with her banjo on her back to perform a Funding Drive ditty she made up in her sleep. Now that's dedication!
You can listen to both songs in CKCU-FM's 'On Demand' archive at https://cod.ckcufm.com/programs/129/45372.html. Pat's song is at the 80-minute mark, and Mary's is around 107 minutes.
It's easy to make a Funding Drive pledge to CKCU-FM – just go to http://www.ckcufm.com/pledge and fill in a few fields. There are lots of ways to contribute, including a new automatic monthly payment option. You'll receive a charitable donation tax receipt... and you'll be helping to keep community radio strong.
Host of Friday Special Blend and Canadian Spaces, Chris White, is one of the *many* people who make this station possible. Visit ckcufm.com/pledge and show some 💙! #SupportCKCU #FundCKCU #DriveCKCU
