A United Nations staff member was killed and another injured in Rafah on Monday when their UN-marked vehicle was struck on its way to a hospital in the area.

The two staff members from the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (DSS) had been traveling to the European Hospital when their car was hit. UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in a statement that he "condemns all attacks on UN personnel and calls for a full investigation. He sends his condolences to the family of the fallen staff member."

The death of the DSS staff member marks the first death of a foreign UN staff member in Gaza since the start of Israel’s ground offensive after Hamas‘ October 7 terror attack.

Guterres‘ spokesperson told journalists on Monday that information was still being gathered on the incident, and that Guterres has reiterated "his urgent appeal for an immediate humanitarian cease-fire and for the release of all hostages."

An Israeli military spokesperson said the incident was under review.

A senior US army officer has resigned, citing his country’s support for Israel as a reason for the widespread loss of Palestinian civilian lives, adding to a string of resignations by high-ranking American military and civilian officials.

In a letter released on Monday Harrison Mann, an army major, explained to his colleagues at the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) that his November resignation was in fact due to “moral injury” stemming from US support for Israel’s war in Gaza and the harm caused to Palestinians.

“I have been unable to ignore the connection between those images and my duties here. This caused me incredible shame and guilt,” Mann writes.

“At some point — whatever the justification — you’re either advancing a policy that enables the mass starvation of children, or you’re not,” Mann details in his letter.

“And I want to clarify that as the descendent of European Jews, I was raised in a particularly unforgiving moral environment when it came to the topic of bearing responsibility for ethnic cleansing.”

Mann says he chose to share his letter publicly after he received an “unexpected outpouring of support” from some of his former colleagues.
