Our guest Dr. Robert J. Melamede, Ph.D., also known as Bob, served as a Scientific Advisor of New Colombia Resources, Inc. since April 22, 2014.

Dr. Melamede also serves as a Scientific Advisor for Cannabis Therapeutics as well as a variety other of state dispensaries and ma*****na patient advocacy groups. He served as the Chief Executive Officer and President of Cannabis Science Inc., since July 2009 and served as its Secretary from July 2009 to June 2014 and Interim Chief Financial Officer from December 20, 2012 to November 2013. He served as the Chief Science Officer of Cannabis Science, Inc. He served as the Chief Science Officer of Gulf Onshore, Inc., since March 30, 2009. He served as the Chairman of the Biology Department at University of Colorado, Colorado Springs since 2005, where he continues to teach and research cannabinoids, cancer, and DNA repair. He has been the Member of Scientific Advisor Board at Cannabis Science, Inc. since June 2014. He served as a Member of Advisory Board at Enertopia Corp. since March 26, 2014 and Alta Vista Ventures Ltd. since August 2015. He served as a Director of Conexus Cattle Corp. until December 19, 2008, Gulf Onshore, Inc., since March 30, 2009 and Brazil Gold Coproration until December 19, 2008. He serves on the Editorial Board of The Journal of the International Association for Cannabis as Medicine, the Scientific Advisory Board of Americans for Safe Access, Sensible Colorado, Scientific Advisor for Cannabis Therapeutics and its Director as well as a variety other of state dispensaries and ma*****na patient advocacy groups. He served as a Director of Cannabis Science, Inc. Dr. Melamede is recognized as a leading authority on the therapeutic uses of cannabis, and has authored or co-authored dozens of papers on a wide variety of scientific subjects. Dr. Melamede has a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry.

🧐 multiple studies confirm that consuming a high fat meal before taking your plant medicine orally can significantly increase absorption and prolong effects?

Canadian researchers found that oral formats (like edibles) ingested after a fatty meal led to slower onset but higher blood levels of THℂ and its metabolite 11-OH-THℂ compared to fasted conditions. On average, systemic exposure increased by 2.5 times when fed.

A trial published in Scientific Reports (2025) showed that taking 70 mg ℂBD with a standardized high fat meal increased peak concentration by 17 fold and total exposure by almost 10 fold compared to fasting. It also created a double peak absorption pattern, which is likely tied to lymphatic transport and delayed metabolism.

🧠Why does this happen? Lipids(fats), specifically long chain triglycerides, in the meal helps cannabinoids form micelles and bind to chylomicrons inside the gut. This allows absorption into the lymphatic system and bypasses some of the liver’s first-pass breakdown/metabolism, boosting the amount of active compound that enters your bloodstream.

👀What's This Means for You? Eating something high in fat before using an edible can delay onset but increase the total exposure to active cannabinoids. That means it may feel like you're getting stronger or longer lasting effects, even if the dose didn’t change.

💡Pro Tip: If using an oral product, consider pairing it with a small fatty meal like yogurt, avocado, nuts, or ice cream. Just remember to start low and go slow, especially when trying for the first time, and consult your healthcare provider if you’re on other medications.
