Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong has warned the UN Security Council that artificial intelligence could one day control nuclear weapons, posing grave risks to global security. In a speech delivered in New York, Wong urged world leaders to establish ethical standards and accountability for AI in warfare, stressing that machines lack human conscience and could escalate conflict without warning.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy echoed similar concerns a day prior, calling AI-driven warfare the most destructive arms race in human history. Defence analyst Dr Malcolm Davis has also acknowledged risks of AI-driven escalation; however he remains sceptical about the likelihood of autonomous nuclear launches.

Gympie Regional Council has voted 5-3 to remove fluoride from its water supply, becoming the second Queensland region to do so in under a year. Queensland has the lowest rate of fluoridated water nationally, with 54 of 77 councils opting out.

The decision, made after prolonged debate and following a petition coordinated by the My Place Gympie Group, has sparked backlash from health experts and political leaders, who warn of worsening dental health outcomes.

Mayor Glen Hartwig cited cost savings of $255,000 annually, while critics argue the move undermines a proven public health measure and that it will cost the public more in terms of dental treatment, particularly for children. The controversy has reignited calls for fluoride policy to be handled at the state level, with concerns over misinformation and long-term health impacts.

Last Thursday, an Optus network upgrade failure resulted in a triple zero outage. Around 600 customers were impacted and a number of emergency calls in South Australia, the Northern Territory, and Western Australia failed to connect. Emergency calls were unable to be made for almost fourteen hours, while normal calls continued to operate. A 13-hour Optus outage after a botched network upgrade on Thursday blocked over 600 Triple Zero calls and may have contributed to four deaths. The company failed to act on early warnings and delayed notifying regulators, prompting national outrage and a federal investigation. CEO Stephen Rue admitted processes weren’t followed.

Communications Minister Anika Wells and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese have condemned the failure, warning of “significant consequences.” The Australian Communications and Media Authority is investigating, citing previous repeated breaches, including a $12 million fine in 2023. Experts are calling for stricter standards, real-time reporting, and stronger safeguards to ensure emergency call reliability across the telecommunications sector.

A snapped 1,500-volt overhead wire caused two days of disruption across Sydney’s rail network in May 2025, stranding passengers and halting over 1,200 services. The incident exposed serious failures in maintenance, leadership, and communication.

A review revealed the fault was identified in 2020 but never repaired due to poor defect logging and inadequate inspections, and proposed 12 actions to improve the railway service. The NSW government has accepted all 12 recommendations, including AI-assisted monitoring, improved customer messaging, and digital crew systems.
Transport Minister John Graham has pledged $458.4 million over the next four years for asset renewal and repair, acknowledging the network is “not up to scratch” and must meet public expectations.
