We are marking a year since we launched our book club in September 2024 with a review of the late author Professor Ama Ata Aidoo's debut novel: 'Our Sister Killjoy: or Reflections from a Black-eyed Squint'.

This book was published 48 years ago and has been described as a: 'a witty, experimental work whose main point is a stylish dismissal of characteristic attitudes of both the white world and the black middle class.'.

It follows the story of a young Ghanaian woman called Sissie who is sponsored visit to Germany and shares her experience of Germany and later England, and explores how she is seen by the natives and how they also perceive her.

The AKADi Mag team went to see the heart-warming film ‘The Fisherman’, written and directed by Zoey Martinson and featuring an all-star Ghanaian cast including Adwoa Akoto.

Tradition and modernity can seem poles apart but when the livelihoods of fishermen (and one fisherwoman) are at stake, they find a way to work in harmony.

This 120-minute film is refreshing, humorous (there’s a talking fish 🐠), while still managing to highlight powerful themes around environmentalism, gender and class, as well as exploring the role of tradition in modern Ghanaian society.

After the screening, audience members got to learn more about the genesis of this film (which was initially just a short) and much more…check out the clips.

The Fisherman was one of a series screened at .o.u.l.fest in conjunction with at the

If you haven’t seen the film and are in Accra later this month, you’ll be able to catch it at Silverbird cinema at West Hills and Accra Mall on 19 September.

81-year-old Hannah Dankwa has lived in the UK for around 60 years and has been receiving treatment for cancer.

Four months ago, she took a short visit to Ghana but has been denied entry back into the U.K. due to what had been described as an ‘irregularity’ over her date of birth.

What has made things worse is she still needs to be monitored in hospital in the UK following chemotherapy treatment.

Watch the full news report from Channel 4 segment in our stories.

Last year a similar story broke when Nelson Shardey, then a 74-year-old Ghanaian man who had lived in the UK for nearly 50 years, risked deportation.

Last year, the Home Office u-turned on its decision and Mr Shardey has been allowed to stay in the country.

Seven years after the Windrush scandal came to light it seems some people from Commonwealth countries who were invited by the government to live and work her...

We are back with another thrilling AKADi Mag Book Club session.

If you didn't know, we read and review books by Ghanaian authors!
This month, we will be reading and reviewing: 'Homegoing' by Yaa Gyasi.

This is going to be an interesting read for a few reasons. I've heard from some that it's really powerfully written but is very traumatic. I've also learnt that the book has courted criticism because of some inaccuracies in the facts behind this story.

If you've read this book or want to - and would like to join us as we discuss it, jump on our Zoom later on this month.

📅 Date: Saturday 30 August
🌍 What: AKADi Mag Book Review of 'Homegoing' by Yaa Gyasi
🎟️ Fee: free
📍 Where: https://lnkd.in/eX74d8EV
🗓 4pm Ghana
5pm UK
6pm Austria

We've been reading a book by a Ghanaian author near enough once a month. And sometimes, we get the authors on and 'grill' them on their book.
Check out our discussions with the authors here:

Krystle Zara Appiah on her book 'Rootless'

And Nii Ayikwei Armah on his book 'A Tail of the Blue Bird'.

Who are we?

"For those of us who were born outside of Ghana or who came as children with no living memory of the West African nation, Ghana becomes a patchwork of the stories that those who lived there tell us."

I wrote a piece for 44Words.Art, founded by Annabel Boachie, which explores what it means to be Ghanaian. I explored this view of identity through literature written by British-Ghanaian authors.
