Defekt

I was on my way home the other night from an old friends funeral, only to find out another friend had passed away. I hadn’t posted anything yet because I couldn’t find the words, and now I’m even more at a loss. This week has been a real kick in the gut. People be out here dying way too young right now.

After Fallen Ent. fell nearly 20 years ago, JB and I opened a studio in his garage called Deviant Productions in Saginaw, MI. It wasn’t much, but that studio was instrumental in kick starting the careers of so many talented artists. I recorded half of my album Broken Mirrorz in that studio. We had a lot of good times there. Long story short, at one point we had a disagreement about the studio and I pulled all my equipment out of there to build my own. I don’t think I ever really reconnected with him after that. I’d be lying if I said that doesn’t make me feel a bit guilty now. His death has reminded me that life is way too short to hold grudges over petty nonsense. I spent the afternoon at his funeral and the evening after hanging out with Staplez, V Sinizter, and old school homie Steve Clark. We reminisced about the old days, and traded horrorcore war stories. To me it seemed fitting, but I’m pretty sure people were staring at us cross eyed because while they were crying we were sharing stories and laughing. People grieve differently, I guess. I hope that when I die, my friends are able to do the same at my memorial because to me it would be an honor to be the catalyst to make them dig up such good memories. Jody, you will be missed.

On my way home from Jody’s funeral I got the call about Stubbs. My initial reaction was anger. You can’t find a recent picture of this guy where he is not rocking a shirt supporting Murder House or MNE or Wicked 101 or Defekt or one of our homies in the underground. This dude would give you the shirt off his back or the blood out his arm. He was the definition of support and loyalty. A once in a lifetime kind of friend. He would do anything to see his brothers succeed in this cruel joke that is our dream; the rap game. He was selfless; it always felt like helping us succeed was his life’s work. The underground lost a comrade, and so many of us lost a friend. As I’m typing this, my anger has finally gave way to sadness. The worst part is I get the sense he never fully understood how much we appreciated and loved him. You always think there will be a tomorrow to tell someone. His death proves that is not the case. My thoughts are with everyone who was closer to him than I was. You too, will be greatly missed Stubbs.
