What do Google's Gemini privacy changes actually mean?

A Google email about Gemini privacy is causing quite the stir. The alarm came from a change in what the chatbot can access when your history is turned off. However, the update's implications are far less sensational than initially feared.

Here's the heart of the email that set off the hubbub in the otherwise sleepy summer tech press. "Gemini will soon be able to help you use Phone, Messages, WhatsApp and Utilities on your phone, whether your Gemini Apps Activity is on or off." The email also noted that the change starts rolling out automatically on July 7. So, that bold part sounds pretty bad, right? Gemini is just rifling through our texts, no matter what we say??!

In this case, the change is no more concerning than, well, anything else AI companies do with your data. Before this update, Gemini's Apps Activity Setting had to be on to use those extensions. If you wanted to let Gemini handle tasks like making calls or sending texts, you need to save your conversations. If not, you couldn't use Gemini's Phone, Messages, WhatsApp or Utilities extensions.

In other words, you had to store your chats on Google's servers to get Gemini's full power. (Google still stores them for 72 hours even when it's off. But that mandatory period has been in place since Gemini was still called Bard.) That also meant your interactions could be used to train Google's AI models.

What's happening now appears to be better for privacy. Now, you can leave the chatbot's history off and still use those features. You still don't have to use the extensions. If you do, Google won't train on them or store them for more than three days if your Apps Activity is off.

The update is likely a case of Google paving the way for Gemini to replace Google Assistant on Android. (That happens later this year.) Those are the kinds of tasks a phone's default assistant will need to handle.

It's good to be concerned about AI privacy.

The Download: AI for cancer diagnosis, and HIV prevention

Why it’s so hard to use AI to diagnose cancer. Peering into the body to find and diagnose cancer is all about spotting patterns. Radiologists use x-rays and magnetic resonance imaging to illuminate tumors, and pathologists examine tissue from kidneys, livers, and other areas under microscopes and look for patterns that show how severe a cancer is, whether particular treatments could work, and where the malignancy may spread. In theory, artificial intelligence should be great at helping out.Visual analysis is something that AI has gotten quite good at since the first image recognition models began taking off nearly 15 years ago. Even though no model will be perfect, you can imagine a powerful algorithm someday catching something that a human pathologist missed, or at least speeding up the process of getting a diagnosis. We’re starting to see lots of new efforts to build such a model—at least seven attempts in the last year alone—but they all remain experimental. What will it take to make them good enough to be used in the real world?

While he believes smart machines can take us to Mars and drive our cars for us, Musk remains worried that artificial intelligence holds a darker potential.

Elon Musk, a chief advocate of cars smart enough to park and drive themselves, continues to escalate his spooky speech when it comes to the next level of computation -- the malicious potential of artificial intelligence continues to freak him out.

"With artificial intelligence, we are summoning the demon, You know all those stories where there's the guy with the pentagram and the holy water and he's like... yeah, he's sure he can control the demon, [but] it doesn't work out."

This has become a recurring theme in Musk's public comments, and each time he warns of the AI bogeyman it seems even more dire.

In June, Musk raised the specter of the " Terminator" franchise, saying that he invests in companies working on artificial intelligence just to be able to keep an eye on the technology.

In August, he reiterated his concerns in a tweet, writing that AI is "potentially more dangerous than nukes." Just a few weeks ago, Musk half-joked on a different stage that a future AI system tasked with eliminating spam might decide that the best way to accomplish this task is to eliminate humans.

But this is the first time I'm aware of that Musk has kicked up the rhetoric another notch -- perhaps anticipating this week's onslaught of Halloween costumes -- to compare AI to something supernatural like demons.

How to deal with the demonic forces of AI in the future? In a strange move for a tech mogul, Musk suggests it might be a good idea to fight one bogeyman with another (depending on your political perspective) in the form of government regulators.

"If I were to guess at what our biggest existential threat is, it's probably that," he said, referring to artificial intelligence. "I'm increasingly inclined to think there should be some regulatory oversight, maybe at the national and international level just to make sure that we don't do something very foolish."

Indeed. Who knows what demonic hellscape could emerge if we ever let artificially intelligent machines get ahold of a Ouija board. Watch Musk's comments for yourself in the video below.

Why Are European Countries Suddenly Instructing Citizens To Prepare For War?

We should be doing all that we can to find a way out of this mess.

The war in Ukraine is not good for anyone except for the military-industrial complex, and so leaders on both sides should be seeking to sit down at the negotiating table while it is still possible to do so.

But instead of pushing for negotiations, a number of countries in Europe appear to be preparing for war.

For example, Sweden began to distribute more than 5 million copies of a booklet "advising its citizens how to prepare for war.Sweden-Finland War Brochure: Sweden and Finland have issued updated survival guidance for citizens to enhance preparedness for war, natural disasters, and other crises. Sweden is distributing over five million copies of a booklet titled "If Crisis or War Comes," while Finland has launched an online crisis preparedness resource.

These measures reflect growing concerns following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Both nations, now NATO members, are emphasizing resilience, with advice covering emergency supplies, evacuation, and mental health support during crises.

Monsanto "Intelligence Center"

In its fight to avoid liability for causing cancer, the agricultural giant Monsanto (now owned by Bayer) created an "intelligence fusion center" to "monitor and discredit" journalists and activists, Sam Levin reported for The Guardian in August 2019.

More than 18,000 people have filed suit against Monsanto, alleging that exposure to Roundup [weedkiller] caused non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and that Monsanto covered up the risks by manipulating scientific data and silencing critics, the Hill summarized. The company has lost three high-profile cases in the past year, and Bayer is reportedly offering $8 billion to settle all outstanding claims.

Monsanto adopted a multipronged strategy to target Carey Gillam, a Reuters journalist who investigated the company's weedkiller,The Guardian reported. This took place while also targeting Neil Young (who released a 2015 record, The Monsanto Years), and creating a massive, multimillion-dollar spying and disinformation campaign targeting journalists writing about it, as well as scientists and advocates exposing the risks its product posed. Creating a covert army of seemingly neutral allies to attack its critics was central to Monsanto's strategy.

The report was based on internal documents (primarily from 2015 to 2017) released during trial. They showed that Monsanto planned a series of actions to attack a book authored by Gillam prior to its release, including writing talking points for third parties to criticize the book and directing industry and farmer customers' on how to post negative reviews.

In addition, Monsanto paid Google to skew search results promoting criticism of Gillam's work on Monsanto, and they discussed strategies for pressuring Reuters with the goal of getting her reassigned. The company "had a 'Carey Gillam Book' spreadsheet, with more than 20 actions dedicated to opposing her book before its publication." They also "wrote a lengthy report about singer Neil Young's anti-Monsanto advocacy, monitoring his impact on social media, and at one point considering 'legal action.'"

The entire pool of journalists covering the third trial was also targeted in a covert influence operation, Paul Thacker reported for The Huffington Post. A purported "freelancer for the BBC" schmoozed other reporters, trying to steer them toward writing stories critical of the plaintiffs suing Monsanto. Their curiosity aroused, they discovered that "her LinkedIn account said she worked for FTI Consulting, a global business advisory firm that Monsanto and Bayer, Monsanto's parent company, had engaged for consulting," and she subsequently went into a digital disappearing act.

"Monsanto has also previously employed shadowy networks of consultants, PR firms and front groups to spy on and influence reporters," Thacker wrote. "And all of it appears to be part of a pattern at the company of using a variety of tactics to intimidate, mislead and discredit journalists and critics."

"Monsanto's campaign to monitor and discredit journalists and other critics has received almost no corporate news coverage," Project Censored notes.

If they Don’t Start Locking Up The Criminals, We Are Literally Going To Have To Lock Up EVERYTHING

Crime is completely and utterly out of control in this nation. During the first six months of this year, retail theft was up 109 percent in
the city of Los Angeles. In response to this tsunami of theft, retailers are starting to lock up products all over the nation. But if they don’t start locking up the criminals, they are literally going to have to lock up everything. Unfortunately, right now they cannot lock up all of the criminals, because the number of criminals far exceeds the number of empty spots in our prisons. Even though they have more people locked up than any other nation on the entire planet, our streets are still absolutely teeming with predators. This is what an advanced stage of social decay looks like, and it isn’t pretty.

During a recent interview with CNBC, the CEO of Target insisted that customers are thankful that the retailer is now locking up body wash, toothpaste and deodorant…
