🚱 Water Outages Hit Joburg! Rand Water has started a massive 21-day maintenance project across Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Ekurhuleni, leaving many areas with low pressure or no water at all.

💧 Affected areas include:
✅ Soweto
✅ Randburg
✅ Roodepoort
✅ Lenasia
✅ Crown Gardens
✅ Commando System (Brixton, Hursthill, Crosby)
✅ Aeroton & Naturena

Residents are urged to store water in advance, as some places could take 5 to 14 days to stabilise once maintenance ends.

🚚 Water tankers will be dispatched to the hardest-hit areas to assist communities.

Rand Water is conducting maintenance work that is causing water supply interruptions in Johannesburg.

Rand Water spokesperson Makenosi Maroo says the residents of Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni need not panic about the second phase of maintenance starting Monday morning.

The weeks-long first phase of the major maintenance operation was concluded successfully earlier in June 2025.

Maroo says the maintenance will impact three of the four major water pumping stations - Eikenhof, Palmiet and Zwartkopjes - affecting three Gauteng Metro municipalities and Madibeng Municipality in the North West.

Also included are Mogale City in the West Rand and Rustenburg.

🚨 A RIVER OF DISEASE IN GAUTENG? 💀🌊 The Klip River, once a vital water source for communities in Gauteng, has now turned into a toxic stream of sewage, chemicals, and death. Residents describe it as a "river of disease" — and rightfully so. 💔

But one man, Dr Ferrial Adam from WaterCAN, is refusing to let it stay that way. Armed with water testing kits and a fierce determination, he’s exposing the truth and holding those in power accountable. 🧪⚖️

E. coli levels in this river are 100x higher than the legal limit. The pollution threatens not only the environment but the lives and livelihoods of people who rely on this river for farming, fishing, and survival. 🐟🌽

🌊 Boksburg Lake Turns Rusty Red Due to Acid Mine Drainage

Residents are being urged to avoid Boksburg Lake after it turned a startling rusty red. The cause? Toxic acid mine drainage (AMD) seeping into the waterway from the Central mining Basin, as confirmed by the Trans-Caledon Tunnel Authority (TCTA).

AMD occurs when acidic mine water surfaces from underground mining voids, carrying harmful substances like heavy metals and salts. This pollution is a legacy of over a century of gold mining on the Witwatersrand.

The TCTA operates three AMD treatment plants on the Witwatersrand goldfields, aiming to treat mine water before it's discharged into rivers. Despite these efforts, the recent rainy season caused mine water levels to rise, leading to the unexpected surfacing of AMD near Boksburg Lake.

Authorities have initiated a water quality monitoring program along the affected stream, down to Natalspruit. The public is advised not to consume water from Boksburg Lake or downstream areas like Cinderella Dam.

🚱 Gauteng Water Crisis Deepens 🚱

Residents across Gauteng are facing mounting frustration as water outages persist, with some areas experiencing dry taps for weeks. The ongoing crisis, attributed to infrastructure failures, power outages, and maintenance issues at key pumping stations like Eikenhof and Zwartkopjes, has left thousands without reliable water supply.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called for urgent intervention, highlighting the unacceptable level of service delivery failures. Meanwhile, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has acknowledged the challenges, citing vandalism and power outages as contributing factors.

As the crisis continues, residents are demanding immediate action to restore water services and address the underlying issues plaguing the province's water infrastructure.
