LOCAL REALTORS ARRESTED IN APPLING COUNTY IN CHILD DEATH INVESTIGATION
Local realtors Dustin Sauls and Cierra Chancey have been arrested for concealing a death and possession of co***ne in the September 28, 2022 death of their daughter, sixth-month-old Madi Sauls.
According to a press release by the Douglas office of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), Sauls, 41, and Chancey, 36, both of Blackshear were arrested by the GBI in Pierce County Friday, May 30, with the assistance of the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.
Sauls and Chancey were booked into the Appling County Jail.
The GBI was originally requested by the Baxley Police Department to investigate the death of the Sauls child. The couple was living in Baxley at the time. Preliminary information indicated the parents delayed reporting the death and were in possession of a substance later determined to be co***ne at the time.
This is a developing story.
A complete report will be included in the June 11 edition of The Blackshear Times.

Georgia Mystery: Was drowning death su***de or murder?
Glynn County Commissioner Tom Sublett's 2012 death was ruled a su***de, even though his hands were zip-tied.

SAINT SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- A coastal Georgia commissioner was found dead after playing poker with friends. His death was ruled a su***de, even though his hands were bound. Loved ones refuse to accept that Tom Sublett would kill himself. His case remains a Georgia mystery.
The County Commissioner
At the time of his death, 52-year-old Tom Sublett was District 2 Chairman for the Glynn County Board of Commissioners, representing Jekyll, Sea and St. Simons islands. He was elected in 2008 to a four-year term, which was set to expire Dec. 31, 2012. He also worked as a commercial real estate agent, having decided not to pursue reelection.

On Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, Sublett participated in a low-stakes poker game at William Parker's house; Parker told police he and Sublett were part of a group that met regularly to play cards. The game ended at around 10:15 p.m., and Sublett left Parker's house with fellow poker player Allen Whittington.
Sublett's wife Carol called the Glynn County Police Department at around 2:30 a.m. the next day to say her husband never returned home. Sublett's car was found shortly before 4 a.m. at Gascoigne Bluff, a park about a mile from his St. Simons Island house. His body was pulled from the nearby river two hours later.
Investigators said Sublett's hands were bound together with zip ties. He had been shot in the head, near his left ear, but the wound was not fatal.
"He was alive when he went in the water. His cause of death is drowning," said Joseph Scott Morgan, a distinguished scholar at the Jacksonville State University Center for Applied Forensics. "It's not so much the cause -- it's the manner. How are you going to determine the manner?"
The Investigation
Police originally investigated Sublett's death as a homicide. They spoke with Allen Whittington, the friend who left the poker game with Sublett. Whittington said that, per their routine, Sublett dropped him off at around 10:30 p.m. in the Brunswick Winn-Dixie parking lot where he'd left his car.
After receiving a worried phone call from Sublett's wife in the middle of the night, Whittington drove the route his friend typically took home. He told the GBI he looked along the road and even under a bridge, hoping to spot Sublett's Toyota Avalon.
"I was worried something had happened," Whittington said. "Even though I didn't think Tom would kill himself, it crossed my mind."
Whittington was the one who found Sublett's car at Gascoigne Bluff.

"I just had a sense that I needed to go through (the park) and just check it out on my way" to Sublett's subdivision, he said.
Seven weeks into the investigation, the coroner reached a conclusion: Tom Sublett had committed su***de. The GBI agreed and closed the case in July 2013.
Mark Johnson, an attorney for the Sublett family, said the victim's wife, children and grandchildren do not believe he killed himself.
"The finding that the coroner made, nobody in the family believes it or thinks it's correct," he said.
The Theories
Investigators recovered a packet of zip ties, an empty gun holster and a loaded magazine from Sublett's car. But the gun used to shoot him in the head was never found, giving some credibility to the theory that he was murdered.
"It's almost like someone is standing over him, put the gun in his ear after he's hog-tied, and shoots him and kicks him in the water," 11Alive legal analyst Philip Holloway said.
Holloway pointed out that if Sublett had shot himself with his zip-tied hands, it would've been easier to aim the gun upward beneath his chin, not against the side of his head.
Jacksonville State's Morgan wondered how Sublett supposedly tied his hands. Morgan tried to bind his own hands with zip ties. It took a little time and a lot of maneuvering, but he managed to do it.
Holloway said the coroner had the option of ruling Sublett's cause of death "undetermined," yet chose to call it a su***de. But by all accounts, Tom Sublett had no reason to take his own life. He was a devoted family man and, apart from his mortgage, did not have any major debt. He'd undergone shoulder surgery, but that was his only known health issue.
Carol Sublett told detectives her husband was "happy as always, excited about the holidays" in the days before he passed away.
"He doesn't get angry. He doesn't hold grudges. He's just a happy-go-lucky guy," she said in a police interview.

"I can't even imagine why they would rule this as a su***de," Morgan said, adding that he believes Sublett's death was "obviously a drowning, manner of death left undetermined."
Holloway took his own theory a step further: "Based on everything -- manner of death: homicide, ex*****on style."
"The only thing that we know for sure is the cause of death," Holloway added. "Everything else is just one giant question mark."
Anyone with information in Tom Sublett's death is encouraged to call Sublett family attorney Mark Johnson at 912-265-6700.

4 years ago, the DA Keith Higgins began with 2 million in savings. He got 2 million more in COVID funds. All this on top of the 5-county budget in place each year.

He also gets 5 state-paid Assistant District Attorney’s at no cost to the counties. Now he is 1.3 million owing to Glynn County for salaries to county -paid ADAs and staff.

He reduced that to 888,000+ by transferring money from the Victim fund and the Asset forfeiture fund. At least 4 ADAs have resigned. But he needs more!

We need a forensic audit to find out where all the money went before the Counties give him more. Just to verify it was not theft but mismanagement.

He knew last December that he was over budget and did nothing about it and hid it from the voters in his campaign.

Remember, the Wayne County Administrator worked for and supported him. The Appling County attorney also supported him in his election. Both are conflicts of interest when it comes to giving advice to the Commissioners.

Apparently Wayne County is going to have to fund Juvenile Prosecution here!

Higgins requested an additional $122,000.00 from Appling County to prosecute any juvenile cases. I can’t imagine how much will be requested from Wayne County.

If the Wayne County Commissioners don’t grant Higgins whatever amount he throws out for Wayne County for the 2024-5 budget, it appears he will no longer prosecute any juveniles.

Couldn’t we just hire our own prosecutor for all cases here? Just asking?!?!?

According to Appling County Attorney Tracy Brown, juveniles are a large percentage of the crime? Who knew?

Appling County initially approved 1/3 of the $122k requested, but appears to have changed their minds and have a session Tuesday. Without the full amount, apparently he won’t prosecute!

Well you know if I think it, it just spills right out!

Googling “hire our own prosecutor”!

So with a surplus going in 4 years ago of 4 million, he is in the hole 1 million, and barely any cases indicted much less taken to trial, what will our next 4 years look like?

Keith Higgins - Random Collection of Comments That Stand True

Several of us are fed up by the inaction of our DA Keith Higgins. He has only sent a small amount of cases to the grand jury all year. He hasn’t prosecuted a case himself in over 5 years. We have criminals on the streets because he isn’t doing his job . Glynn County is the perfect place to commit a crime- no consequences.

We need a DA with the courage to lead, the integrity to deliver honest performance and be honest with victims and the passion to protect our communities. DA stands for District attorney not Defense attorney. This guy has no honor and has to go . We are happy the GBI is involved however a signed confession will not be enough for Higgins. (And it wasn’t!!)

However, they say that as DA, Keith Higgins failed to try a single case on his own. Thats not how being DA works, and if it’s true what a joke. (Apparently he failed as well at balancing a budget.)
I was initially part of his campaign. I was not impressed by who he is as a person, and I don’t believe he has any respect for women.

Which leads me to add, they both believe pleading out physical and sexual crimes against women and children to lesser crimes is a win for the good guys. Gross!

I didn’t find him to be that smart; it takes more ego than intelligence to hold an elected office in this area.

Women and victims in this county have a right to be angry. There cannot be this much constant chatter about something that isn’t happening. I believe it’s likely part of the reason that Glynn County hasn’t put the court system online. It’s much harder for the public to see just how dirty it is underneath the surface if they keep everyone living a decade behind the rest of the country. (OH WOW! Surprised most of Wayne County still is!)

The publishing of personal information is outrageous, isn’t it? I’m surprised at the negligence. That’s the ego outweighing character, not to mention his condescending manner in which he speaks to victims as well as employees! He can’t keep staff at any office.

He’s an elected-official, so everything he and each ADA in all 5 counties have done during his term is up public for judgment. Same goes for the Judges that accept the pleas. But again, it’s not digitized, so they all escape accountability while deflecting from their own behavior by labeling women as angry, emotional, or crazy. There definitely hasn’t been Justice for All during his term.

He’s all smoke and mirrors. We saw that with the last Trenton Lehrkamp press conference. That was no DA speaking - that was a classic defense attorney press tour. He checked off everything they (law enforcement) didn’t do and deflected from what they did do by acting as if the entire thing was a waste of time and resources because a little girl had been r***d by a homeless man that was already in custody.

Sir, you just publicly used the tragedy of child’s r**e in our community to elude to the fact that the BPD, the GCPD, and your own investigators are collectively incapable of handling two cases at one time. I was shocked. Our local police seem pretty damn competent to me when it comes to catching the bad guys - justice only seems to fail once they reach Higgins.

And then who does he blame? Poor investigating. He still seems to be on the other side, you weren’t wrong about that. (Well, that sure sounds familiar as well.). I imagine thats how he’ll likely spin the answer if given the chance. Elude to poor investigations by police, lack of evidence, lack of staff, lack of time in the courts that are still attempting to ride Covid coattails to explain the stagnant case timelines.

Exactly what are your thoughts on him after he didn’t give a flying f&ck the autistic kid got tortured and said he consented to it, then gave the kids a misdemeanor for almost killing the kid.

Sometimes there are things that just shouldn’t be said, and then there is me!

Higgins since you apparently can’t keep in budget, you probably shouldn’t have taken out the drug task force! They had the jack $$ rolling in! Once you cut them out, you should have prepared for it!

You are on your own Higgins!
