On today’s episode of Jazzed, our Spotlight Artist of the Week is saxophonist, bandleader and composer John Coltrane, whose birthday is tomorrow Sept 23. On today's show, we're going to concentrate on a transition year in Trane's life. The year is 1960. We'll hear music from his excellent album "My Favorite Things", recorded in October 1960. The recipient of 9 Grammy awards, Eddie Palmieri was instrumental in creating the soundtrack of Latin jazz in the US. We'll hear music from throughout his career, including his work with vibraphonist Cal Tjader, trumpeter Brian Lynch, and his big brother, band leader and keyboardist Charlie Palmieri. Today on Jazzed is another edition of First Monday Live. The first Monday of each month is devoted to live, mostly unreleased jazz concert recordings.

Today we're going to recognize the annual International Jazz Day, which occurs each April 30th. The 2025 edition featured a concert in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. Participating musicians included pianists Herbie Hancock, Danilo Perez and Kenny Barron; guitarists John McLaughlin and John Pizzarelli; singer Dee Dee Bridgewater and so many more. Both Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys and Sly Stone of Sly & The Family Stone passed away recently at the age of 82. Their contributions to music cannot be overstated.
