Nickel Boys by RaMell Ross

3.5+/5

I really enjoyed the presentation of this film; they made great use of inserts. The problem with movies featuring such horrific events is trying to make it “entertaining” to watch. Ross did a great job keeping the viewer engaged and interested. Sometimes, movies from year to year can be compared to each other. In this case, this movie is similar in nature to Killers of the Flower Moon, from last year. My issue with that film is that I found the presentation very bland and boring; apparently, the people involved wanted their story told in this way and that’s their decision, but I thought it made the film bland; Nickel Boys does the complete opposite by making this film very engaging with its presentation. This is a much watch.

A Complete Unknown by James Mangold

3.5/5

I thought this was the least interesting musical biopic I’ve seen. To be fair, I don’t care about Bob Dylan, but I don’t care about Johnny Cash and that movie was great. I just found that none of the movie was very interesting. Maybe Timmy was too nonchalant, but nothing in the movie seemed like there was a consequence, it was just stuff happening. Maybe that’s Dylan and maybe he nailed the character, but I didn’t find it very interesting.

The Brutalist by Brady Corbet

3.5-/5

Admittedly, once I found out the movie is about architecture, I kinda checked out. This movie was well made and well acted; I just didn’t care. Corbet did a great job making the characters more interesting than their face value, but showing the vices doesn’t make me care about them. Sure, it humanizes them, but that still doesn’t make me care that you’re having a difficult time building something because someone else wants to build it differently; however, I also disliked The Phantom Thread and There Will Be Blood after I saw them for the first time and have gone to enjoy both films.

Anora by Sean Baker

3+/5

I did not enjoy this film. I should note that I don’t have kids so I don’t have to deal with people constantly talking when they shouldn’t be. I understand that we were supposed to see Anora as a strong warrior type character, but she just came across as annoying and everyone else felt weak. The whole movie was an auditory nightmare.

Wicked by Jon M. Chu

3.5-/5

Honestly, the singing was a bit much. I like the actual story (I very much enjoyed the first book – only one I read), and when the singing took a backseat to the story, it was pretty cool. I know this is based on the musical, but I still think tightening some of the early songs or completely cutting/reworking them would have made for a more enjoyable film. The set pieces looked amazing. I think the film would work better by trimming some of the fat.

Emilia Perez 3.5+/5

I was really disappointed when I found out the director wasn’t Almodovar! I wasn’t trilled about the musical aspect of it, but they handled it very well. A very compelling story and well acted. The screenplay was top-notch. This is actually probably my favourite film of those nominated.
(note: I just found out it's imdb rating is 5.4/10 which is not only a travesty but also hilarious.)

The Substance (2024) by Coralie Fargeat

3.5-/5

I was pretty onboard until the end; it felt like they didn’t have an ending so they went full Society and just je**ed off on everyone. I was very disappointed. This film stands no chance of winning but it’s a pretty big deal it was nominated. I enjoyed the story line and much of the ex*****on. Great effects.

Dune: Part Two by Denis Villeneuve
3.5+/5
Everything was fine except Zendaya getting jealous. Maybe it’s from the book but it seems completely out of character. No chance of winning and if I may be so bold, neither will the third one (I'd love to be proven wrong). This was very well made but I don’t think there is anything that really makes it stand out as a Best Picture nominee other than grandiosity.

No, we're not dead, and this is my annual Best Picture Nomination review. To start, I think it's a bit of a down year for films and if they went with 5 nominees, it would have been better. But I digest!
Note: I’m Still Here by Walter Salles - I wasn’t able to see this film.

Conclave by Edward Berger
3.5+/5
It was shot very well. I really enjoyed some of the shots the way they were framed and lit; beautiful. The story was very engaging considering the subject is rather boring. Very good screenplay. The acting was superb, as was to be expected. If they want to play it safe, Best Picture.

Poor Things by Yorgos Lanthimos
4/5
“The incredible tale about the fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter.”

Yorgos is hit or miss for me, but I enjoy watching his movies because he challenges me. I didn't 'get' Dogtooth or The Killing of a Sacred Deer, but I enjoyed trying. There was no trying with Poor Things; this was my favourite movie of the year, at least of the nominees. The story was great, the acting was great, I don't like the fish bulb effect but it works here, I loved the cinematography, the effects were great. I know it has no chance but this is my sleeper pick to win Best Picture and sleeper to win Best Director. I also think it will win Best Adapted Screenplay, but that won't be a shocker. I think Stone should win Best Actress, but I don't think it'll happen. I think Ruffalo has a serious shot at Best Supporting Actor.

Past Lives by Celine Song
3.5/5
“Nora and Hae Sung, two deeply connected childhood friends, are wrested apart after Nora's family emigrates from South Korea. Twenty years later, they are reunited for one fateful week as they confront notions of love and destiny.”

An interesting story about Korean and American ways of life. I thought the cinematography was great. A lot of cool shots. The acting was very good.
Recommend.
