One of the many mind-blowing moments of my career at Guitar Player Magazine was when one of MY guitar heroes — Bill Nelson — asked to interview one of HIS guitar heroes, Duane Eddy. The result was a stunning, intimate, and informative discussion between two transcendent talents. The complete January 2013 article is not available online—as the current owner of GP doesn't feel legacy content is worth posting at GP.com—but if you send an email to [email protected], I will send you a homemade scan. Much appreciation to Duane for all he did to inspire other guitarists. He was a quiet giant of instrumental guitar music and a truly wonderful wonderful human. RIP Duane Eddy (1938-2024).

Guardians of Guitar is pretty thrilled about the imminent publication (approx. May 30) of the Earl Slick (official) book, GUITAR. Earl was incredibly supportive of every wild thing I asked him to do while I was at Guitar Player Magazine—from the GUITAR SUPERSTAR competition to seminars, videos, and numerous interviews (including his Holiday 2012 cover story). So looking forward to reading this!

One of music's greatest sidemen, Earl Slick, delivers his account of playing guitar for Bowie, Lennon, Jagger and many more in a fascinating window into the rock n' roll lifestyle. Preorder a SIGNED copy of Guitar here: https://bit.ly/3ISIBoO

It's almost May 1, which means Wroclaw, Poland's Gitarowy Rekord Guinnessa is almost here. Thanks to founder Leszek Cichoński, I've had the honor of performing on the Market Square stage in front of thousands of guitar-wielding fans with legends and icons such as Steve Vai, Jennifer Batten, Al Di Meola, Greg Koch, and even "Super Yob" Slade's Dave Hill. (Cheryl and I are "hiding" about four bodies behind Steve Vai in this video from last year.) It's a beautiful and overwhelming experience. Check out the video to see that I'm talking about, and if you want more info, go to https://www.facebook.com/GitarowyRekord

Fender Custom Shop announces 2022 Prestige Collection.

For many guitarists, these Prestige instruments are dream machines, as spending between $9,500 to $36,500 is a just that — a dream. I'm super into mid-mod art, so my favorite was builder Jason Smith's Prestige Electric Sea Gems Esquire designed by artist Laura Bennett. But I won't be writing a $13k check that beauty in this lifetime. Watch the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktxPO1ue1MU

I've always loved Gretsch Guitars. So great to see a proper museum to the brand opening in downtown Savannah, Georgia. Fred Gretsch and his wife Dinah Murphy Gretsch were always great supporters of Guitar Player Magazine when I was Editor Boy there. So thrilled for both of them, as well as Gretsch fans and the extended Gretsch family.

I learned today that Mudvayne has reunited and is gigging for the first time in 12 years, and the news kicked off a wonderful memory (as well as a cautionary tale of "timing not being optimum"). In 2001, I wanted to start a heavy rock magazine for young guitarists and bassists — a demographic that Guitar Player Magazine did not strongly appeal to — and when I pitched the idea to then-publisher Paul Gallo, he said, "Yeah. Do it." Paul was not afraid of taking risks. Mudvayne's bassist Ryknow posed for a super vibey shot by Melissa Punch and GP art director Alexandra Zeigler devised a fun, youthful, and tough look for the magazine.

It turned out to be a little too much, too soon. Many of the usual GP advertisers didn't get it, or were repelled by it, or didn't see the value (at the time) in addressing younger, "more metal" players. RUMBLE (which I named to honor one of my ferocious guitar heroes, Link Wray) did just fine, but it didn't exactly print money, and, ultimately, the sales team kinda killed it off after a few issues. "Too hard to sell," was the reason I got. I LOVED producing that magazine, and I missed the energy it brought to the GP team, as well as interacting with all of the edgy artists, tossing content ideas around, talking to young players, and doing something fresh.

But, many thanks to MUDVAYNE for kicking off the magazine, and congrats on the band's return to active duty! More news here: https://www.facebook.com/mudvayne

The Next Chapter

True story (hahaha): I was made redundant when Future Publishing UK acquired all the assets of NewBay Media, the corporation that owned Guitar Player, Bass Player, Keyboard, Electronic Musician, Frets, Guitar World, and Guitar Aficionado. Twenty-one years of service to the guitar community went p**f in an instant.

Oh, well. The future waits for no one, and you can either deal with it, or whine and cry and rage.

So HOW I am dealing with it is to CONTINUE all of the community support efforts and journalistic endeavors that forged and informed my two decades at Guitar Player.

Guardians of Guitar is dedicated to evangelizing those planks of wood we love so dearly, as well as all who play them — meaning women and men of all ages, all skill levels, and all styles. This Facebook joint — and I am developing a website, an Instagram page, and a Twitter site, too — will share info, promote guitar players and their musical explorations, talk about gear, seek out the best music lessons and video productions, and generally geek out about all things guitar. I hope you’ll joint the tribe so that we can reach out as a powerful, crazy, and fun-as-all-heck little community to share our adoration for each other as creators of joyous noises. If you want me to cover your project, please FB message me, or email me at [email protected]. Hey, we have a rumble to start...
