The Pakistan cricket board (PCB) has decided to take a stricter action against the players’ discipline violations during the 2024 T20 World Cup and recent series, sources revealed on Friday.

According to the sources, the PCB will conduct a thorough review of team dynamics and player conduct leading up to the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

A committee is being established to assess the reports from head coach Gary Kirsten and team manager Wahab Riaz. It is anticipated that a former captain will chair this committee.

Based on the committee’s recommendations, the PCB may impose sanctions on players found guilty of forming cliques or violating team discipline. The reports suggested that disciplinary issues involving Shaheen Shah Afridi during the World Cup also surfaced where he allegedly displayed poor behavior.

Despite these reports, team manager Wahab Riaz is said to have overlooked Afridi’s infractions.

There were also reports of players speaking negatively about each other, which contributed to a disruptive atmosphere in the dressing room.

The sources indicated that Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq exhibited undue favoritism towards certain players, who subsequently underperformed.

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Hafeezur Rehman announced that the PTA is in the process of whitelisting VPNs, meaning only approved VPNs will be accessible in Pakistan.

“Currently, only 30% of people in Pakistan use VPNs,” Rehman stated, emphasizing the potential for VPNs to be blocked. These comments were made during a Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat meeting chaired by Rana Mahmoodul Hasan in Islamabad.

Social media platforms have been suspended in Pakistan since February 17 due to national security concerns, but they can still be accessed via VPNs. The PTA chairman mentioned that the ban on X (formerly known as Twitter) would be lifted whenever the government requested it.

Discussing VPN usage in Pakistan, Rehman noted that the usage of X decreased by 70% despite VPN availability. He also mentioned that around 56% of the population has internet access and that a 5G auction is expected to take place in March-April next year.

He also informed the committee that only 7% of complaints submitted to X in the last three months were addressed, making X the platform with the lowest compliance rate among all social media platforms.

Rehman clarified that social media platforms are blocked only at the government’s request and that the PTA contacts the platforms regarding any complaints related to violations of Pakistani law.

When questioned about whether content creators pay taxes on income from international ads, Rehman said there is currently no legislation covering this issue.

Hezbollah has confirmed one of its senior military commanders was killed in an Israeli air strike in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon.

Late on Wednesday, the Iran-backed group said Fuad Shukr's body had been found in the rubble of a building that was hit on Tuesday.

Four other people were killed in the strike, including two children. Earlier, the Israeli military said Shukr had been the target of an "intelligence-based elimination".

It said the strike was a response to a rocket attack that killed 12 people in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Saturday, which Israel says the commander helped plan.Hezbollah has denied having any involvement.

Fuad Shukr, who was in his early sixties, is believed to be a key military adviser to Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

The strike targeted a building in Haret Hreik, a part of the Dahiyeh suburb of Beirut.

It is a fortified, densely populated area. Dahiyeh itself is surrounded by Hezbollah checkpoints.

The children killed in the air strike were a 10-year-old boy and a his six-year-old sister. Shukr will be buried on Thursday, the statement said.

Lebanon's Prime Minister Najib Mikati called the attack a "criminal act".

An Israeli reaction to Saturday's rocket attack on the Golan had been widely expected. The country's security cabinet had authorised Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to decide how to retaliate.

Iran has threatened “harsh punishment” for Israel, which it says was responsible for assassinating Hamas’s leader on Wednesday.

Israel has not commented directly on the strike which killed Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran early on Wednesday.

However, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country had delivered “crushing blows” to its enemies in recent days, including the killing of a senior Hezbollah commander in Lebanon hours before the Tehran strike.

He warned Israelis that “challenging days lie ahead”, as fears of a wider conflict in the Middle East grow."Since the strike in Beirut, we have heard threats from all sides," he told a televised address.

"We are prepared for any scenario and we will stand united and determined."

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned against a "dangerous escalation" of hostilities in the region.Hamas's armed wing said the death of Haniyeh, who was widely viewed as the group's overall leader, would "take the battle to new dimensions" and have major repercussions.

The group attacked Israel on 7 October, killing around 1,200 people. Since the attack, Israel has vowed to destroy Hamas.

Haniyeh, who played an important role in negotiations over a ceasefire in Gaza, was killed hours after attending the inauguration of Iran's new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, in Tehran.

A senior Hamas official told the BBC the killing took place in the same building where Haniyeh had stayed during previous visits to Iran.

Three Hamas leaders and a number of guards were with him in the same building, they said.

Khalil Al-Hayya, a senior Hamas official, told a news conference that a missile hit Haniyeh "directly", citing witnesses who were with him.

At least 16 people have been killed in an Israeli air strike on a school in the Gaza Strip, Palestinian officials have said. Dozens more have been injured.

The building was sheltering thousands of displaced people at Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it struck several “terrorists operating in structures located in the area of Al-Jaouni School”.

A local source said the target was a room allegedly used by Hamas police. The BBC is unable to verify this claim.

Saudi Arabia has approved granting Saudi citizenship to scientists, doctors, researchers, entrepreneurs, and other individuals with rare skills, experience, and specializations.

According to a royal decree, the kingdom has offered citizenship to talented individuals in medical, scientific, cultural, sports, and technical fields to achieve its goals. The initiative is part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 programme to create an attractive environment for investing in human capital and attracting skilled labour.

This move is expected to help bolster the kingdom’s economic, health, cultural, sports, and innovation sectors by bringing in prominent experts and specialists.

In December 2021, Saudi leadership approved a similar initiative, granting citizenship to prominent individuals in these fields. This ongoing effort has underscored the kingdom’s commitment to enhancing its development across various sectors by leveraging global expertise.

In November 2023, Pakistan signed agreements with Saudi companies to bolster collaboration and facilitate the recruitment of Pakistani workers and professionals for various large-scale projects in Saudi Arabia.

The agreements outlined plans to establish training and orientation centres in Pakistan, which would cater to the skill development needs aligned with the demands of labour markets in Saudi Arabia.

Over 900 pilgrims dead, including 68 Indians, during Hajj in Saudi Arabia, says diplomatAccording to the Arab diplomats, the total included 323 Egyptians and 60 Jordanians, with one diplomat noting that almost all the Egyptians succumbed "due to heat."The Indian government has not issued any official statement on the death toll during the Hajj pilgrimage yet.

The updated death toll was reported after two Arab diplomats informed AFP on Tuesday that 550 fatalities had been recorded during the hajj. This pilgrimage, one of the five pillars of Islam, is an obligation for allAs many as 68 Indian nationals died during the Hajj pilgrimage this year, which was marked by searing heat and intense high temperatures, said people familiar with the matter on Wednesday. The overall death toll stands at more than 900.

"We have confirmed around 68 dead... Some are because of natural causes, and we had many old-age pilgrims. And some are due to the weather conditions, that's what we assume," the diplomat told AFP on the condition of anonymity.Deaths have also been reported by Indonesia, Iran, Senegal, Tunisia, and Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region, though in many instances, the authorities have not disclosed the exact causes.

Last year, most of the 200 dead pilgrims were from Indonesia. Saudi Arabia has not disclosed the number of fatalities but reported over 2,700 cases of "heat exhaustion" on Sunday alone

Chimpanzees ‘self-medicate’ with healing plantsWild chimpanzees eat plants that have pain-relieving and anti-bacterial properties to heal themselves, according to scientists.
They described their “detective work” in the forests of Uganda - observing animals that appeared injured or sick to work out whether they were self-medicating with plants.
When an injured animal sought out something specific from the forest to eat, the researchers collected samples of that plant and had it analysed. Most of the plants tested turned out to have antibacterial properties.
The scientists, who published their findings in the journal PLOS One, think the chimps could even help in the search for new medicines.“We can't test everything in these forests for their medicinal properties, lead researcher Dr Elodie Freymann, from the University of Oxford, said. “So why not test the plants that we have this information about - plants the chimps are seeking out?”
Over the past four years, Dr Freymann has spent months at a time following and carefully observing two communities of wild chimpanzees in Budongo Central Forest Reserve.
As well as looking for signs of pain - an animal limping or holding its body in an unusual way - she and her colleagues collected samples of droppings and urine to check for illness and infection.
They paid particular attention when an injured or ill chimpanzee sought out something they do not normally eat - such as tree bark or fruit skin.
“We were looking for these behavioural clues that the plants might be medicinal,” Dr Freymann explained.
She described one particular chimp - a male - that had a badly wounded hand.
