✅ Correction Made: Sebego Clinic Placard Restored

By Mpho Wa Mongwaketse

Three days ago, The Kanye Bulletin drew attention to a small but significant error on the placard at the newly inaugurated clinic in Kanye. The sign, meant to read “Sebego Clinic,” had mistakenly been inscribed as “Sebogo Clinic.” Today, we’re pleased to confirm that the correction has been made.

Thanks to the sponsors’ swift response, the name has now been corrected to reflect the intended honorific: Sebego Clinic.

Beyond the correction, Nilesh emphasized the heart behind the donation:

This gesture—now properly named—stands as a testament to community care, civic partnership, and the healing power of intention. We thank the sponsors for their responsiveness and generosity, and we celebrate the clinic’s role in serving the people of Kanye with dignity and hope.

ITS SEBEGO ESENG SEBOGO!!!

By Mpho Wa Mongwaketse

Sebego was a pivotal figure in Ngwaketse history, especially during the turbulent early 19th century when the Bangwaketse faced immense external and internal pressures. Here's a deeper look into his role and legacy:

Sebego served as a regent during a time of political fragmentation. After the retreat of the Matebele in 1837, the Bangwaketse were left divided—Sebego held sway in Lehututu, while Segotshane led another faction in the eastern Gangwaketse region.

The region suffered from years of poor harvests, livestock losses, and disrupted trade. These hardships weakened Makaba II’s once-prosperous kingdom and made Sebego’s leadership even more precarious.

In 1839, Sebego sought peace with Segotshane and other dikgosi to reunite the morafe and return to their masimo (fields). However, his overtures were met with suspicion and rejected.

He then turned to missionaries, hoping their presence would bring security and legitimacy. Sebego believed that having a white missionary live with him could attract fi****ms and protection—a common belief at the time.

Sebego reached out to Rev. Dr. David Livingstone, who had recently arrived and married into Sebego’s family. Livingstone, known for his militant Christian views against slavery and oppression, was sympathetic to Sebego’s plight.

Livingstone’s writings reflect his belief in spiritual resistance, and he saw Sebego’s struggle as part of a broader moral fight against injustice.

Sebego’s leadership marked a transitional period in Bangwaketse history—between traditional rule and increasing missionary influence.

His efforts to unify the Bangwaketse and engage with European missionaries show a strategic, if desperate, attempt to navigate colonial and tribal politics.

Teachers Unions Call for Clarity as School Sports Relaunch Proceeds Without Finalized Framework

By Mpho Keoepile

Kanye, 5 August 2025 — The Botswana Teachers Union (BTU) and Botswana Sectors of Educators Trade Union (BOSETU) have issued a joint statement expressing concern over the relaunch of School Sports, citing a lack of consultation and unresolved logistics.

According to union officials, early dialogues with the Ministry of Sports and Arts (MOSA) and the Ministry of Tertiary Education in February 2025 led to initial optimism. Both ministries and unions agreed to collaboratively develop proposals to guide the resumption of school sports programs. A joint technical team comprising educators, coaches, and sports administrators was formed, and a counterproposal was submitted to MOSA in March.

Despite these efforts, unions say they were blindsided in early August when they learned via social media that His Excellency, the President of Botswana, would be launching School Sports. The unions had not been informed of the operational framework or teacher responsibilities related to the program.

At a hastily convened meeting on 4 August, Minister of Sports and Arts Hon. Jacob Kelebeng apologized for the communication lapse, confirming that School Sports will now be managed under the Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education and held during official working hours. However, he acknowledged that the implementation plan remains unfinished and that the launch is intended only to encourage informal student participation.

📣 **Union Response and Advice to Members**

The unions stress their continued support for school sports but remain firm: without formal consultations and a clearly defined operational strategy, they cannot endorse teacher participation. Pending further engagement, BTU and BOSETU have urged educators to refrain from involvement in school sports activities.

They have proposed two urgent next steps:
- A high-level meeting between union leaders and ministry officials to finalize leadership mandates.
- A follow-up session with the Joint Technical Team to design the modalities of implementation.

🎙️ "We are not against the idea of resuming School Sports," the unions emphasized. "But we must ensure that teachers are not left in uncertainty about their roles and that the program is launched with the structure and integrity it deserves."

This unfolding story highlights the critical need for coordinated communication between government bodies and educators—a necessity if School Sports is to succeed in fostering youth development and national pride.

🗞️ Kanye on the Rise: Arts Festival Rekindles the Spirit of Creative Citizenship

By Mpho Wa Mongwaketse

This past weekend, Kanye reverberated not just with music, but with meaning. The National Arts Festival, hosted for the first time on local grounds, wasn’t merely an event—it was a proclamation. A reminder that creative power, civic imagination, and cultural heritage do not belong solely to urban centers or distant capitals. They reside in Kanye, in its youth, its elders, its rhythms, and its stories.

From the theme "Recognising our cultural diversity and celebrating our freedom of expressions", the festival invited artists, dreamers, and community custodians to do more than perform—it asked them to believe. To believe that Botswana can incubate greatness. That it can be both cradle and catalyst of a movement rooted in self-expression and civic resilience.

The lineup was eclectic yet intentional: dancers moving in unison with the land, spoken word artists resurrecting village lore, and thespian sculptors shaping memory into form. The event itself was an artwork—a tapestry of intention, with illustrations of unity, motion, and cultural dignity stitched into its design.

Beyond the aesthetics, the festival centered the conversation around what it means to be seen, tackled the role of arts in nation-building, while it gave young creatives a platform not only to learn—but to lead. Local artisans were honored, not as side acts, but as foundations of Botswana’s aesthetic wisdom.

What made this weekend remarkable wasn't the applause—it was the quiet resolve. The notion that Arts, often bypassed in national dialogue, had taken the mic and wouldn’t let go. This editorial echoes that resolve. Arts are no longer just entertainment—it’s a language. And the world is beginning to listen.
