|| ‎BCNHS filipino club inaugurates national language month

‎With the theme “Paglinang sa Filipino at Katutubong Wika: Makasaysayan sa Pagkakaisa ng Bansa,” National Language Month officially commences at the flag ceremony held at Bacolod City National High School (BCNHS) grandstand earlier, on August 4, 2025.

‎Led by the Filipino Club and Filipino Department, students from all grade levels gathered at the field along with their class advisers, as the program started with a morning prayer and the singing of the National Anthem.

‎This was followed by the Panatang Makabayan, Panunumpa sa Watawat, Panunumpa ng Kawani ng Gobyerno, DepEd Mission, Vision, and Core Values, and the value focus of the month.

‎To lift the spirits of the crowd, members of the Filipino Club danced to Bacolodnon, the regional hymn, Galaw Pilipinas, and Pinoy Ako.

‎Ms. Vicky Solitano, Filipino Department Head, led the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected officers of the Filipino Club and the newly elected teachers of the Filipino Department.

‎Ms. Solitano also served as proxy of Dr. Richard M. Gelangre, BCNHS school principal, for the announcement of the upcoming activities for the month-long celebration of the national language.

‎“Mabuhay ang wikang Filipino, mabuhay ang sambayanang Pilipinas,” stated Ms. Solitano as she ended her speech. [Long live the Filipino language, long live the Filipino people.]

‎Singing the BCNHS alma mater song in unison, the students went back to their classrooms as the program concluded.

|| Seminar-workshop continues for its second day

The City Light – Senior High School (TCL-SHS) continued its seminar-workshop yesterday, August 1, 2025, at the ICT Laboratory.

The program began with an opening prayer, the singing of the National Anthem, and a short ice breaker, followed by a News Writing session led by Ms. Nicole Briones.

“Writing a news article is an essential skill that every journalist must know,” said Ms. Nicole Briones.

After that, Mr. Mykle Manreza took the stage to discuss Online Publishing.

Mr. Mykle Manreza emphasized in his discussion the importance of color scheme and the unity of elements used in the output.

On the other hand, Mr. Lance Querubin Mabugat, guest speaker for Radio Broadcasting Technical, had a one-on-one discussion with one member of that specific category.

The students were then grouped for a collaborative task covering all that they had acquired from day one to day two.

Day two was filled with experience, knowledge, and ideas as campus journalists are set to compete in the upcoming Division Schools Press Conference (DSPC).

|| TCL-SHS trains for DSPC

Campus journalists sharpened their skills in a seminar-workshop in preparation for the Division Schools Press Conference (DSPC) on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at BCNHS AVR.

Students immersed themselves in lectures and activities from various categories: Copyreading and Headline Writing, Feature Writing, SciTech Writing, Column Writing, Editorial Writing, and TV and Radio Broadcasting.

Mrs. Ma. Karren Katherine P. Baquillos, SHS School Publication Adviser stated that instead of focusing on one category, they must explore other categories to practice flexibility.

After each seminar session, speakers gave students the time to ask for questions, seek tips and receive advice.

“As a student journalist, you must stick to the truth and keep its fire burning,” said Ms. Neria Cassandra Palmes, SciTech and Feature Writing speaker and former TCL-SHS editor-in-chief.

The first seminar-workshop provided an avenue for students to hone their skills and learn the importance of being part of the publication.

|| When You Have Nothing but a Lunchbox Full of Air

‎Every July comes the season of health. Posters go up. Slogans about "𝐆𝐨, 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰, 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐰." Nutrition pyramids. Clean eating challenges. Smoothies in tumblers. Bento lunchboxes filled with colors. Nutrition month is a celebration. Yes it is. But it’s also a reminder for someone of what they don’t have.

‎Can you remember that one classmate? The one who often quietly looks away and always pretends they are not hungry. Stomach’s been growling since morning, but what’s harder to ignore is the shame. The shame of: “What if someone sees I didn’t bring anything again?”

‎Given a mouth.
‎But not guaranteed a meal.

‎You’d be surprised how many students go through that.

‎Have you seen a good pretender before? Because I've seen different. Sitting still, trying to ignore the dizziness. Trying to focus while their mind wanders to anything that might feel like food. It’s the taste of the biscuit, a taste that others may not even be able to afford.

‎Food insecurity is an issue that many students face. A thought about growing up with the uncomfortable truth that food is not always guaranteed. Yes, there is an option, it sounds like “healthy options” which cost you something you can't afford. Some don’t even have enough to bring rice. Some eat the same thing every day... Because? that’s all that’s left. And when Nutrition Month comes around, it sounds like: “Hello dear, you aren't invited to this celebration.”

‎Poverty, unemployment and rising costs might just be statistics. But actually they are not. They are limiting what goes in or doesn't go in someone’s lunchbox. And behind those plastic wrappers, it is a kid who worries more about surviving the day than meeting their vegetable quota.

‎They feel ashamed.
‎They get teased.
‎They might say, “I’m just not hungry,”
‎because a lie is easier to tell than the truth.

‎The fact that it can be invisible only makes it even worse. Food insecurity doesn’t always look dramatic. It looks like that quiet classmate who always turns down lunch. Or that student who eats fast but never finishes. Or the one who avoids eye contact when others talk about what they’re eating.

‎Think about having food as something you can be grateful with. Something you can enjoy. Something healthy. Because if it is provided to you, then you are given a chance. You are guaranteed a meal.
‎This month shouldn’t just be about colorful food pyramids. This month should also be about awareness, empathy, and gratitude.

‎Each day is a chance to choose what nourishes you — not just in the season of health, but in every season of life.

‎“𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚𝙨 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙄 𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙪𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙢𝙮 𝙥𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙬 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬𝙨 𝙢𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙣 𝙄 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙢𝙮𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙛.”

‎Surely it is relatable, a line so familiar to students that cries its struggles away and wakes up like it doesn't have a single worry. But only it doesn't know that every time it pretends, it slowly cracks. The more it conceals the pain, the more it breaks down. Every time it changes to what people wanted it to be, it loses itself—gradually and piece by piece.

‎How to take away the shine of a star: let it believe that it's worth something, and when it feels content about itself, compare it to others and tell it that it wasn't that bright after all. These students are still kids, with ambitions and dreams, but forced to meet the unrealistic expectations of society and people that surround them. All of them face different struggles yet have something in common—they are barely seen and barely heard. No one knows the hardships of a student that hardly makes ends meet, an overachiever who still tries to maintain its image even under pressure, and a class clown that laughs its problems away. Which sparks curiosity—are those smiles always genuine? Do those eyes also lack sleep? The once hopeful children couldn't even afford to break down because all that they have are themselves. The silent cries, crippling anxiety, the way it looks in the mirror and almost not recognizing itself—no one knows, except the pillow it buries itself into like a child who wants nothing but to shine on its own.

‎For those students, it's never easy to show vulnerability, especially in a society that molded us to become strong and resistant. At this point, we should not be surprised at how they often seem to isolate themselves and learn how to be independent despite them being young. How lucky are those pillows to know everything that's unsaid? Because it is the pillow that's not alive but listened. It never judged but sympathized the greatest. It didn't complain when the crying was too loud, nor did it feel hurt from the tight grip of anger; it just stayed still and simply gave something that's more than peace and comfort.

|| PEACE campaign kicks off at BCNHS flag ceremony

On Monday, July 21, 2025, a flag ceremony was held at the Bacolod Arts Center of Bacolod City National High School, led by the Student Technologists and Entrepreneurs of the Philippines (STEP) Club and the TLE Department, in collaboration with the Supreme Secondary Learners Government (SSLG).

Students from Grades 7, 9, 11, and 12 attended the ceremony, standing in line with their respective sections, accompanied by their class advisers.

The morning program began with a prayer and the singing of the national anthem, followed by the Panunumpa sa Watawat, Panatang Makabayan, Panunumpa ng mga Kawani ng Gobyerno, the DepEd Mission, Vision, and Core Values, as well as the introduction of the Value Focus for the week.

To energize the crowd, the STEP Club led a lively session featuring the songs Bacolodnon and Galaw Pilipinas, along with a Zumba number.

The highlight of the event was the official launch of the PEACE campaign— an anti-bullying initiative by the DepEd-Division of Negros Island Region. The SSLG introduced the campaign’s logo, explained its symbolism, and shared its future advocacies.

A unity dance to Kapayapaan and a unity song titled We Rise as One were performed by selected students.

To conclude the program, Dr. Richard M. Gelangre, the school principal, delivered additional announcements and reminders.

Singing the BCNHS alma mater song in unison, the students headed back to their classrooms as the program concluded.

|| One of 34: Mcdean’s gold adds to PH’s Medal surge in JJAU 2025

The Philippines seized a total of 108 medals—34 golds, 35 silvers, and 39 bronzes—finishing second overall among 10 participating countries at the 2nd Jiu-Jitsu Asian Union (JJAU) Southeast Asia Regional Championship 2025, held over the weekend at the PhilSports Arena in Manila.

Mcdean V. Genoveses, a Grade 12 Accountancy and Business Management (ABM) student from Bacolod City National High School, made his international debut by fearlessly competing on the global stage—securing a gold medal in the No-Gi division of a jiu-jitsu tournament.

Mcdean’s journey began at just 10 years old, when his aunt encouraged him to try jiu-jitsu. What started as a forced step quickly turned into passion and discipline. Throughout his preparation, he trains intensely after school, balancing academics and athletics through time management and dedication.

“I remind myself that this is not just a fight—it’s a chance to learn. I step onto the mats with purpose, not ego,” Mcdean shared.

Looking ahead, Mcdean aims to compete internationally—not just to win, but to evolve.

“Win or lose, I'd grow.”

His victory is not only a personal milestone, but also a shining inspiration for aspiring athletes in Bacolod. His story represents the city’s rising talent and its growing presence in the world of competitive jiu-jitsu.
