Verizon “A Safe Place” follows Newark West Side High School Principal Akbar Cook and his mission to keep everyone safe. When the pandemic hit, Cook started Lights On, a recreational program that keeps kids off the street from 6 p.m. to midnight on Fridays during the school year. The program became a safe haven, not just for students, but for the entire community by providing food to anyone who needed it. After receiving national attention, the program caught the attention of Oprah Winfrey who provided funding for at least three years.
