For the first time in two decades, the United States passport has fallen out of the world’s top ten most powerful passports, now ranking 12th alongside Malaysia, as revealed by the Henley Passport Index. Singapore continues to hold the top spot with visa-free access to 193 destinations, followed closely by South Korea and Japan.
This decline highlights the shifting dynamics of global mobility, largely influenced by U.S. immigration policies and limited visa reciprocity. While American citizens can travel freely to many nations, the U.S. grants visa-free access to far fewer countries in return. As a result, interest among Americans in obtaining dual citizenship and alternative passports is growing rapidly.
Nations that promote openness and strengthen international ties are steadily climbing in the rankings, while others that maintain restrictive policies are gradually losing ground.
