Our next Monday Listener Spotlight is Keaton Denney!

Keaton is going into his sixth year of teaching! He taught three years at Warrensburg Middle School and is now entering his third year at Lone Jack Middle and High School. He is a fifth-generation educator, and can’t imagine doing anything else. He serves as the 5th/6th Grade Honor Choir Coordinator for the West Central district of MMEA, and feels fortunate enough to have been chosen as one of the Kansas City Regional Teachers of the Year. He believes our job as music and choir teachers is one of the most important jobs because we can give students an opportunity through music to be the best thing they can be: themselves.

“I love the relatability of The Choir Guys podcast. Whether it is helpful hacks, ideas for the future, or just a laugh from two great guys (and their insightful guests), I know I will always get something I can use in the future in my choir program!”

In this episode, we sit down with internationally acclaimed conductor and arranger Michael Joseph Barrett to talk all things choral—from his years leading the Tuks Camerata to his new life in Australia. He reflects on his recent time spent in the states with the Missouri State Chorale and Camerata’s powerful performance at ACDA in Dallas. We dig into what makes South African choral music so unique, how to perform it authentically, and what not to do in rehearsal. Michael also shares the story behind his favorite arrangement, what’s next in his musical journey, and one absolutely chaotic moment from a Tuks performance. It’s insightful, hilarious, and full of heart!

It's "Monday Listener Spotlight" time! Emma Rowland-Elsen is a UK-based veteran choral conductor, sound-voice therapist, and trauma-informed performance coach, known for redefining what choirs can be. After "falling into" conducting at Oxford University almost 25 years ago, Emma also brings a decade of experience at the intersection of mental health, voice, and community music. Living with PTSD herself, she integrates lived experience with deep professional insight to help choir leaders and vocal coaches build inclusive, emotionally-intelligent spaces where safety, creativity, and high-level artistry coexist. Her work includes inclusion audits, mental health resources for choirs, and the popular UNMUTED Podcast, which explores the real-life challenges of running mentally-healthy choirs - with honesty, humour, and heart.

"I've been listening to the Choir Guys podcast for a bit. I really liked the chat with Roger Emerson as we use a lot of his arrangements in choir. But what was most interesting to me was the discussion about your recent trip to ACDA (OMG I loved the Jacob Collier arrangement of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" that was featured this year) and the mindset of kids who are competing. It was the discussion about giving 100% each day that especially got my attention. We simply don't have 'choir' as a subject in schools over here so I'd love to hear your thoughts about what is done to balance artistic excellence with mental care."
