Today’s tip comes from Chris Newsom, who has a brilliant strategy for getting students to take ownership of their music: before running a song, he simply asks…
“What would Mr. Newsom want?”

Students then volunteer the musical goals themselves—dynamics, phrasing, vowel shapes, cadences, you name it. Beginning choirs call out dynamics, advanced choirs talk schwas and phrasing… and Chris never has to repeat, “Don’t forget measure 5!” again.

It saves time, builds independence, and proves they actually know what you’ve been working on. 🙌
