One of the most powerful things I learned from the Davis Dyslexia Method was this idea of “trigger words”.
Not emotional triggers.
Conceptual ones.
As dyslexics, we usually have no trouble with words we can see.
Table.
Chair.
Door.
Window.
Our brain has a picture.
So the word makes sense.
But many of us struggle with abstract concepts.
Words like authority.
Responsibility.
Cause and effect.
We all use these words every day.
But we all have different pictures in our head.
Here’s the example I often use.
When I say the word authority, what comes to mind for you?
For years, my picture was police officers.
That was authority to me.
Uniforms.
Rules.
Power.
But that is not actually the definition of authority.
It was just my picture.
Now imagine trying to communicate clearly
when everyone in the room has a different picture
for the same word.
This is why dyslexic entrepreneurs can be incredible storytellers
and also incredibly frustrated.
People do not misunderstand the words.
They misunderstand the pictures.
When you understand how you communicate
and how others receive it
you become a far better leader, founder and entrepreneur.
This is also why dyslexia is so much more
than reading, writing and spelling.
It is about perception.
Meaning.
And how we experience the world.
If communication ever feels harder than it should
this might be why.
