In 2020, my world was turned upside down when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The journey that followed was arduous—16 rounds of chemotherapy, a segmentectomy, and 30 rounds of radiation. There were days when I felt like giving up, but I found strength in the hope of tomorrow and the support of my loved ones.
Running has become more than a sport for me; it has been a powerful tool in healing both my body and mind. Each kilometre I run reminds me of the battles I’ve fought and the strength I never knew I had. It has transformed my outlook on life, teaching me discipline, patience, and the importance of self-care. Marathon training has provided me with a sense of control, hope, and a community of like-minded individuals who inspire and uplift me.
This year, I step onto the starting line once again, not just for myself, but for a cause that fuels my passion: CANSA. Running for charity is an extension of my journey—a way to give back, to help others battling cancer, and to raise awareness about this disease that changed my life forever.
To me, running the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon for the second time is not just about earning a medal; it’s about symbolizing hope, resilience, and community. Every kilometre I run echoes my victory over cancer and my commitment to support those still fighting. It’s a reminder that even after the hardest battles, there is strength, purpose, and the power to inspire others.
My story is a testament that life beyond diagnosis is full of possibilities. And with every step I take, I hope to inspire hope in others—reminding them that they are not alone, that healing and strength can be found in the journey, and that sometimes, a race is about so much more than just crossing the finish line.
