We've moved to a different data provider and some of the features and functions on the site are evolving. A rich level of detail about movies is still available, including some new features that will be possible as we work with this new partner.

Staff pick: A group of men of various nationalities escape from a Siberian gulag during a blizzard and begin a cross-continental trek to freedom, passing through the most brutal of deserts and the lofty Himalayas. Director Peter Weir (Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Last Wave) makes the landscapes look incredible while highlighting the characters' desolation in the face of tremendous adversity.

Staff pick: Do you love the richness of European filmmaking but secretly hanker for the thrills only a big summer blockbuster can provide? You can have your popcorn and eat it too with this racy, edge-of-the-seat WWII thriller about a Jewish woman (Carice van Houten) who dyes her hair blonde and joins the Dutch resistance as their Nazi-seducing spy on the inside.

Staff pick: While not one of Richard Linklater's defining works, his tale of dapper bank robbers set during Prohibition -- based on a true story -- is charming enough, with future Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey leading his brothers into dozens of successful bank robberies, which, for drama's sake, seem to be pulled off more with aw-shucks charm and luck than know-how and criminal grit. Dwight Yoakam, an always welcome presence, plays the explosives expert who gives the crew its jumping-off point. Also noteworthy (or not) as one of the last major film roles of S***t Ulrich.

Staff pick: Released 25 years ago today, Mike Judge's first live-action feature manages to work some hilariously pointed jabs at corporate culture into its good-natured, meandering plot. Jokes are pushed far enough to be funny, but not so far as to become tedious. This mild sense of humor, along with Judge's keen awareness of how the daily grind of office work can drive people a little crazy, makes Office Space an accessible, entertaining satire.

Staff pick: Four brothers in upstate New York live together in a small, no-frills structure that's barely a step up from a shack. When one turns up dead, the police, media and townsfolk all rush to different conclusions, from the innocuous to the incestuous. Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky (Some Kind of Monster, Paradise Lost) interview the brothers, their neighbors and law enforcement to track how the town is processing the story and how they treat the brothers going forward.

Staff pick: You knew there would be movies in heaven, right? In this beautiful, profound, thought-provoking and not-at-all-depressing vision of the afterlife, recently deceased people meet with a movie studio to choose one indelible moment from their life to re-create as a short film they'll carry with them into eternity. There's not many feel-good movies about death, and this is one of the best.

AllMovie Staff Pick: Beyond all of the classic hallmarks of the film -- Humphrey Bogart in that white suit, Ingrid Bergman's askew hat and eternally-misquoted line, and the nighttime runway showdown -- it's worth another viewing to notice how snappy and funny the dialogue is. Even during the most dramatic, intense moments, there are many, many laughs to be had, mostly thanks to Bogie's dry delivery and the proudly amoral antics of Claude Rains' corrupt police captain.

AllMovie Staff Pick: Liza Minnelli may not use her jazz hands in this landmark musical set in Nazi-era Berlin, but she’s got the moves like director-choreographer Bob Fosse. The film won eight Oscars, including Minnelli, Fosse and supporting actor Joel Grey as the androgynous Emcee of the Kit Kat Klub. Everybody loves a winner, ole chum.
