Last week I had THE BEST time hitting up the and their amazing industry program. Having spent the last 6 months developing my feature for the Funny Features program (backed by don’t you know!) it’s been amazing seeing our script for Ecstasy the feature film get stronger. The way we talk about it get deeper and of course the financial plan get tastier. Couldn’t have done it without you ! Workshops, masterclasses, mentors… it’s been an incredible program and it’s a real honour to be one of 9 incredible comedy projects to take it that step further and get a whole lot of love along the way.

But even better has been learning from my peers. I didn’t expect to be in such talented company and I honestly can’t wait to see their projects come to life. Watch out for ‘Responsibility’ ‘Mr Uterus’ ‘The Crown Mules’ ‘Beach Body’ ‘My Fake Family’ ‘The Floaties’ ‘Hundreds and Thousands’ & ‘Committed’ 🤣

After the festival success of my short film ‘ecstasy’ I always wondered about the possibility of turning our story into something bigger. Could a father and son trying to buy drugs so the Dad could dance with his wife at her surprise birthday party last longer than 18 minutes. How could the story expand and last for say a whole night.

I spent months writing down little ideas here and there. Noting funny scenarios or lines of dialogue and then it came to me. A way to expand it. A way for all the characters to potentially be on screen for 90 minutes. I wrote out story beats, scene ideas with a clear beginning and end and over the course of a few months I wrote. Every morning for a few hours.

Since then the script has been sent to friends for feedback and entered into various competitions and schemes.

-It got to the second read assessment stage out of 800 entries of the creative england ‘Breakout’ scheme
- Entered into the BAFTA Rocliffe writing competition with optimistic notes
- BBC Writersroom - Out of 4,287 entries got to the second read placing in the top 10%
- Academy Nicholl Fellowship - Out of 5599 entries got into the top 15% and had the most incredible reader feedback.

And now this leads me to Funny Features. An inaugural program to develop comedy projects. We’re one of 9 projects selected by the team - Backed but the BFI and national lottery funding. A 6 month program covering story and finance to develop the film, creating a packaged film that’s ready to speak to investors about. With us ultimately pitching next March in Glasgow.

All the schemes before were part of the journey and I can’t wait to take the film further.

Earlier this year I decided I wanted to get some bigger on set TV experience. I took a punt and messaged winner .east a wonderful director with a wealth of experience (Killing Eve, Downton, Trigger point, Lost in Space to name but a few)

I don’t know how but Jon had commented very positively on my short film - I still remember pinching myself when I saw his endless IMDB credits, so I plucked up the courage and asked if there were any shadowing opportunities later in the year and he said message me in the third week of April.

And this is where I found myself… in Brighton sat on the toilet in our mini video village/ bo***ir with Jon, DP Jan Richter-Friss and a friendly AC. And honestly there’s no place I’d rather be. I had the best few days shadowing Jon and the team. I learned so much from Jon about the puzzle that is long form and thinking about where the scene sits in the story and I’m so grateful that he gave me the opportunity and the time (and answered all of my questions).

Thanks to everyone in the cast and crew who made my short time there a pleasure.

I can’t wait to put everything I learnt to use. 🎬

Feedback from The Nicholl Fellowship ran by - I’m encourage that out of 5599 entries my feature film script for Ecstasy was among the top 15% of all entries. I’m really proud of this script and it feels like 5 years of graft and craft went into this. Ever since I made the short film I’ve thought about how my short could be something bigger, something wild and fun in the same vain as Superbad and Booksmart, an entertaining action comedy that will make audiences crease and cry and come out of the cinema with an extra bit of bounce in their step, as well as telling a story about that’s authentic. Who knows what the future holds, but for now I’ll cling to this lunge in the right direction. ❤️
