Shout out to Lighter Shade of Brown, and Cypress Hill

Chicano artists and fans have had a steady role in the creation, performance, and growth of rap, both in California and around the world. Twelve years before Tupac delivered his Los Angeles love letter, Kid Frost was emerging in Southern California’s electro-rap scene.

Sad news in rap today. Biz Markie has passed away. RIP Biz. Keep them rapping up in heaven.

His single “Just a Friend” became a Top 10 hit, propelled by its unabashedly off-key chorus.

I've talked about black and white rappers on here but I would be remiss to not include rappers of other ethnicities. A couple rap groups that I heard when I was younger were Lighter Shade of Brown, and of course Cyprus Hill who are rappers of Mexican Descent. If you've heard them before you'll know who I am talking about. I recently heard of a rap group which is made up of Native Americans from Canada. Their name is "Snotty Nose Rez Kids." Here's one of their raps.

In this post I'd like to talk about exclusive female rappers. Now I mentioned in an earlier post that Debra Harry along with her band Blondie had made a rap song that ultimately became the first one to hit number one on the charts, but she wasn't exclusively a rap artist. She was more new wave music. The first female rap artist went by the name of Roxanne Shante (Her birth name was Lo**ta "Shante," Gooden). She was 14, and her first song was "Roxanne's Revenge," which was a rebuttal to a song from the year before called "Roxanne, Roxanne," by UTFO. This sparked was was called the "Roxanne Wars," which included a series of diss songs and followon's throughout the mid-80s.

From Roxanne Shante, you got other earlier female rappers and rap groups like MC Lyte (Real name Lana Michele), Salt N Pepa ( Salt aka Cheryl James, Pepa aka Sandra Denton, and Spinderella aka Deidra "Dee Dee," Roper), and Queen Latifah (Dana Owens). These are the female rappers that I got to know as I was growing into adulthood.

The 80s is often referred to as the 'golden age of hip-hop' and it's not hard to see why. Run DMC, Public Enemy, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five...all of these groups changed the face of rap/hip-hop forever. Rolling Stone magazine stated that the 80s were a time “when it seemed that every

As the 80s dawned and this new genre of music started to take hold, you had other rap groups and solo artists come into their own. Keeping in mind this started in the east coast of the country, some of the groups included Run DMC, Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five (The name was changed in the mid 80s to Grand Master Melle Mel and the Furious FIve), along with NWA, Salt n Pepa (The first successful all female rap group), Beastie Boys (The first successful white rap group which also spawned the first rap album to hit no. 1), and DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince. As solo artist's go, you had LL Cool J, Slick Rick, and many others. Here are a few videos form that time frame.

With regards to women rappers, the first one to hit the charts with a rap song wasn't an exclusive rapper. The band Blondie with their lead singer Debra Harry put out a song called "Rapture," in 1981 which hit #1 on the hot 100 charts in the U.S. When she premiered this single on Solid Gold she gave mention to this new genre of music called rap that was taking hold in urban centers around the country. Here is the video that went with the song:

This history of Rap music is from my perspective and my perspective only. I remember hearing my first rap song when I was in the 8th grade in the late 70s. It was "Rappers Delight," by the Sugar Hill Gang which hit the top 40 charts in 1979. Along with my first rap group I also heard rap song from the first solo rap artist by the name of Kurtis Blow with his "The Breaks." This was to be my first experience into this genre but as the 80s dawned it wouldn't be my last.

I know I've neglected this page since I made it a few years ago. In making it I hoped to spark conversation about iconic rappers of all eras starting in the mid to late 70s, and on into the 21st Century. I do still hope to cover that once I finish with this semester of college. Maybe that can spark conversation on who should be put on a rapper's Mt. Rushmore. My first thought would be rappers such as Kurtis Blow (The first rap solo artist) and such groups as Sugar Hill Gang, Whodini, Run DMC, etc. a whole lot to cover so please have patience.

WOW!! I know the two rappers are Salt-N-Pepa but Spinderella was a main part of this group too. I wonder what happened.

The legendary DJ made the shock revelation to fans via Instagram on Thursday night, where she claimed her groupmates silently gave her the boot — via email — four months ago, but never told anybody.

I haven't done much with this since I made it, but I promise I will in the future. My love for rap and hiphop goes back to the inception of the term rap with the Sugar Hill Gang's first hit in 1977 "Rapper Delight."
