Memory of the Rif:: On this day, August 31, 1925, the Spanish general Primo de Rivera, together with the French generals Philippe Pétain and Robert Georges, and the Sultan of Morocco, in the city of Algeciras, devised a joint action plan to put an end to the Rif Republic, which was under the presidency of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Karim al-Khattabi.”

The Rif National Party held a meeting this Saturday, 23/08/2025, in Girona as part of its European tour.

Girona hosted a new stop of the Rif National Party (PNR) within the series of events that the movement is carrying out across Europe. According to the organizers, these gatherings will culminate in a major event planned in Ajdir, the historic capital of the Rif.

The main goal of these meetings is to establish a space for dialogue with the Rifian diaspora, listen to their proposals, and at the same time provide education about the political and social situation of the Rif from the end of colonial occupation in April 1956 up to the present day. In this historical overview, the party recalls key episodes such as the uprisings and repression of 1958–59, 1984, 1987, 2011, and the popular movement of 2016.

During the meeting, the strategy of the Makhzen—the central power in Morocco—was denounced. According to the PNR, it has led to the “Moroccanization and destruction of the Rif.” Party representatives warned that if this policy continues, the Rif could soon be reduced to nothing more than the memory of an “ancient people.”

The PNR reiterated its commitment to ending violence and repression, demanding “no more blood, no more abductions, no more exiles, no more deaths in the Mediterranean, and no more plundering of the Rif’s natural resources.” According to the movement, “there is no hope for the future under the Alaouite regime.”

In Europe, the party positions itself as a voice for the Rifian cause before institutions, the media, and public opinion, making use of the margins of freedom and democracy available.

Finally, new actions were announced for the coming months. In 2026, the centenary of the fall of the Rif Republic will be commemorated, although resistance continued in western Rif until 1927. The party recalls that the arrest and extradition of President Abdelkrim to France marked the end of the republican experience.

In this context, the PNR has called for participation in the Rifian demonstration in Brussels, scheduled for September 20, to commemorate the establishment of the Rif Republic. The event will feature African and European personalities, as well as coverage from international media.

🚨 On August 14, 2025, in a Moroccan police station in Tangier (Western Rif), a young Rifian was subjected to torture by regime mercenaries after requesting that his statement be recorded in the Rifian language. The absence of Rifian human rights associations is deeply concerning.
