Kisses aren’t as high a priority for some as for others. That’s fair. Phoebe is all about kisses when there aren’t any Hobnobs around.

Hobnobs were a hit with everyone. I’m not sure what the equivalent of tea is for dogs, but apparently they don’t need to dip this biscuit. It’s a biscuit - right?

**"The Soldier's Last Embrace" is a painting brimming with emotion, embodying the depth of the sacred bond between a loyal soldier and his faithful comrade, a companion in arms and path. It is a story that epitomizes the meanings of courage and loyalty, as they met on the path of duty and sacrifice, sharing danger and steadfastness shoulder to shoulder. In this solemn farewell, the voice of silence rises to speak of unbreakable love and of friendship that remains eternal even after departure. It is a sincere tribute to the spirit of loyalty and companionship that time cannot erase.

—This officer showed her LOVE for a stray dog🐶
For more than a week, a frail black dog roamed the streets—limping, frightened, and shrinking away from every hand that reached for her. Abandoned and betrayed, she no longer believed in people.

Deputy Keith Stokes tried again and again to rescue her, but she always slipped away. Then Officer Megan Feidler chose a different approach—she lowered herself to the ground, spoke in a calm, soothing voice, and waited. Slowly, the trembling dog surrendered, lying down beside her. With patience and care, Feidler slipped a leash gently around her neck.😞
Inside the van, the exhausted pup curled up and drifted into sleep, as though she finally felt safe.💞

A veterinary exam later revealed a broken hip. Volunteers gave her a new name—Maeve—and with it, the promise of a new beginning.
After so much hardship, Maeve is finally stepping out of the shadows, guided by compassion, patience, and hope.

"Today, after 16 and a half years, I had to say goodbye to my dear Kira. My heart is broken. Her basket remains empty, no more truffles behind the door when I come home. I can't stop crying. How I miss you... Run free, my sweet girl." 🌈 (Text shared on social media in tribute to a beloved animal)

When Bella, a pit bull mix, was spotted darting through traffic and barking at strangers, most people saw just another stray causing a commotion. But Bella wasn’t lost—she was on a mission.

Teri, one of the pedestrians that day, felt something different in Bella’s desperate eyes. Instead of walking away, she followed her. Bella led Teri through streets and across corners until they reached a quiet home. What they found inside was nothing short of a miracle.

Bella’s owner, a wheelchair-bound man, was lying on the floor, clinging to life. He had suffered stab wounds to his neck and couldn’t call for help. But Bella could. And she did.

Thanks to her brave and loyal heart, help arrived just in time. Her owner survived—and credits Bella with saving his life.

She wasn’t just a pet. She was a hero. 🐾❤️

🌌 67 years ago, Laika was sent into space.
Today, I feel a duty to commemorate her. Not out of nostalgia, not out of mere scientific curiosity—but out of respect, and for that guilt that still weighs on humanity.

Because Laika wasn't just an experiment.
She was life. A presence. Innocence offered to a stranger.

Her real name was Kuderzhavka, which means "slightly wrinkled" in Russian.
But the world knew her as Laika, "The Barker."
She was a husky, half-terrier, picked up on the icy streets of Moscow. She was just three years old. She was chosen for her quiet, obedient, and resilient nature... as if these qualities could justify the doom that awaited her: to die alone in space.

On November 3, 1957, at 2 a.m., Laika departed aboard Sputnik 2.
The capsule contained food, water, and padded walls. But there was no plan for return. From the start, this journey was nothing more than a death sentence in progress.

Some say she survived for seven hours. Others speak of four days.
Alone all the time. Always in silence.
Suspended in a metal cage, as the Earth continued to spin beneath her—farther away.

It orbited 2,570 times around our planet.
And on April 14, 1958, the capsule disintegrated in mid-air. Consumed by fire, by gravity, By forgetting.

Laika didn't ask to be a hero.
She didn't choose to represent science or the space race.
She was just a little wandering dog with eyes seeking affection—and a body transformed into a tool.

✨ That's why, year after year, I continue to tell her story.
Because it reminds us that all progress is not innocent,
and that often our victories were written in the suffering of those who couldn't say "no."

Laika, we haven't forgotten you.
As long as someone speaks your name, it won't be news.
It will be a memory. It will be familiar.
It will be a reminder of what we don't need to repeat.

I told you. Everyone gets Jam Jams.

So I learned what it means to be screeched in yesterday. I love that kind of tradition. Unique culture is why Lisa and I love to travel. Pretty sure I can kiss a cod anywhere, but I’d like to do it in Newfoundland someday. If you want to be on honorary Portlander you’re going to have to get a tattoo of a pine tree on your forearm, so the price of admission is a little higher here. Does your town/village/state/region/province/country have a unique tradition I need to come try?
