For Dani Lee Hutch, Music Director of Suffs Tour, a Love of Stories Fuels a Crucial History Lesson... Suffs tells the story of the American women’s suffrage movement, focusing on true historical events leading up to the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution in 1920 that gave women the right to vote. “It’s incredibly rewarding to be bringing this story to theaters around the country,” says Hutch. “It’s a crucial part of our nation’s story that often gets overlooked in history classes. It’s amazing to be part of bringing these women’s lives and struggles to light, especially now when their story seems more culturally relevant than ever.” https://internationalmusician.org/dani-lee-hutch/

Anyone who plays an instrument gets used to fielding the same or similar comments particular to that instrument. Horn players, for example, get asked about the puddles of liquid they leave behind on the stage floor. For bass players—especially those who might be less than average in stature—the typical comment is something along the lines of, “Wow, that thing is bigger than you are!”

Bassist Nina DeCesare of Local 40-543 (Baltimore, MD) points out that, in her case, the observation is often two-fold: The second part of the comment is usually expressing surprise that a woman is actually playing the bass in an orchestra.

One of the most important aspects of a successful session musician is being quick, says Ilya Toshinskiy, member of Nashville Musicians Association, Local 257. “You have to hit it and be creative, develop a knack for catching what represents the artist well. Sometimes they love it, but sometimes they don’t, and you have to come up with something else pretty quickly.”

If all this sounds stressful, he says that’s part of the challenge. “It’s a great life, but it’s also very competitive. There’s always a hot new producer and new talent. All you can do is try to get better at your craft,” says Toshinskiy.

With diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives under attack on multiple fronts in our current political climate, it stands to reason one of the ways to counter these threats is greater visibility. So believes Kai Rocke, a member of Local 99 (Portland, OR) and a bassoonist and contrabassoonist with Oregon Symphony.
