James Gunn's Ad Astra James Gunn’s Ad Astra combines the best parts of creative magazines and scholarly journals and brings them to Web. All articles will be reviewed by peers.

We will showcase the imaginations of creators and fans, and will show the research and study of scholars inspired by speculative fiction. We are a volunteer organization under the auspices of the Center for the Study of Science Fiction at the University of Kansas. We are working in partnership with the CSSF’s educational outreach program, AboutSF. After our initial publication in June of 2012, Ad

Astra will maintain a stream of content through the year. We will also publish the proceedings of the annual Campbell Conference, which will include selected readings and presentations from Ad Astra. All submissions will be reviewed by volunteer readers and editors, as well as the advisory board. If you wish to contact us, please email any messages to the editor at the following address: [email protected] so that we can give you a more complete and private response than can be provided on social media.

What could you possibly present that will impress them? His haughty voice fills your head.

A chime interrupts your thoughts, as a squid in a tuxedo emerges. With a last exhale, you make your way to the stage to present...

Writing Prompt: It’s 2049. Clean energy has become the standard energy source for the past five years, and your company is the leading source of green energy for exploratory aircrafts. Your work is not so glamorous though; you work in the greenhouse, tending to highly-sought after plants, which are used to power said aircrafts. The flowers are radiant and the work is easy.
One bright morning, you find the security system deactivated, twelve flowers missing, and your fully sentient-AI colleague, Joe, is nowhere to be seen. On the floor, you find a scrunched-up ad from your company, that says this:

Friendly reminder to keep going! After all, who said writing was easy?
