Illinois didn’t choose one breed as its state pet—it chose second chances! 🐶🐱

State law designates shelter dogs and shelter cats living in or adopted from an Illinois shelter or rescue as Illinois’s official state pet. The designation took effect on August 25, 2017.

This is confirmed—not folklore. Illinois General Assembly⁠

The Piasa is on the bluff in Alton.
What is documented: in 1673 Marquette wrote that he saw two painted monsters on these rocks—horns, red eyes, scales, a long tail. The original cliff was cut away for stone. The mural there now is a modern remake.
What is not documented: the tale of Chief Ouatoga baiting a man-eating bird. That version was published in 1836 and later admitted as invention.
The wall is Illinois. The monster fight is the story that stuck.

Heron Pond, Cache River State Natural Area — near Belknap, far southern Illinois.
This is the part of the state that makes people pull over and ask if they crossed a border. A short, easy trail and a floating boardwalk put you in the middle of a cypress-tupelo swamp — knobby knees in the water, herons if you’re lucky, and trees that look older than the interstate system. Parking is free; bring bug spray in warm months and watch the boardwalk after rain. Pair it with the nearby Cache River Wetlands Center when it’s open, or a paddle on the Lower Cache if you want more swamp.
