AT THE AIRPORT, PEOPLE NOTICED A SOLDIER LYING ON THE FLOOR, WHILE HIS DOG GROWLED AT ANYONE WHO CAME NEAR. Airports have their own rhythm — the roll of suitcase wheels, the buzz of announcements, the hiss of espresso machines, the chatter of travelers rushing past. But that afternoon at Mason International, the rhythm broke. Near Gate 14, a young man lay curled on the polished floor. His military uniform was neat but worn, the fabric frayed at the edges, boots half-unlaced as if his strength had run out before he could finish. Beside him, a weathered backpack hinted at miles already traveled. But what froze people in their tracks wasn’t the man — it was his dog. A German Shepherd, proud and steady, sat at his side like stone. Ears pricked, eyes locked on the crowd, every muscle taut with purpose. When a businessman drifted too close with his rolling suitcase, the dog gave a deep, commanding bark — not frantic, but firm, the warning of a guardian. The man backed away immediately. Whispers rippled through the terminal. “Is he okay?” “Why is he sleeping here?” “That has to be a service dog.” Phones appeared. Some recorded. Others called for help.
