It's unclear what the exact nature of Letby's relationship with "Doctor U" was. What do you think?
Was Lucy Letby having an affair with married "Doctor U"? Letby says no, but the prosecution says he was.
In just 3 months (June-September 2016) the pair exchanged 1335 messages, often including love hearts. They went out for meals, “U” bought her chocolates, and colleagues were aware of their “friendship” - when Letby messaged “Nurse E” about a message “U” had sent her, “E” asked if he had asked her to “go commando” (meaning to not wear underwear). Letby replied with 4 laughing emojis - however, at trial she absurdly insisted she did not know what “go commando” meant. “E” continued by saying that the two flirted with each other, to which Letby responded that she didn’t flirt with him and “certainly [didn’t] fancy him”.
In May-June 2017, almost a year after Letby was removed from the ward, “U” went on 5 “dates” with her, including a day trip to London. He even successfully arranged a placement for her at his new job at Alder Hey hospital, at which Letby shadowed nurses while they worked with patients.
In one dramatic moment at trial, as “U” began to give evidence, Letby began to cry and attempted to leave the dock. This was the strongest display of emotion from her throughout the trial by far, and one of very few occasions when she displayed any emotion.
On multiple occasions during cross-examination, Letby appeared to accept the assertion that she had a boyfriend; for example, when asked “You had a house, you had a car, you had a boyfriend?” she responded “yes”. On another occasion, the prosecutor referred to her attempt to walk out when “her boyfriend” began giving evidence. Letby did not dispute the assertion that “U” was her boyfriend, she simply said that she did not feel well.
A note found in Letby’s home read “I loved you and I think you knew that”, along with “U”s name - which was surrounded by love hearts.
So what was the nature of their relationship? Were they just close friends, or was “U” Letby’s boyfriend?
