Why I Won’t Work Without a Deposit (And You Shouldn’t Either!)

Hey, it’s your favorite creature-maker spilling my guts on why I have a strict payment policy for custom creature suits—and trust me, it’s not just because I like sounding fancy with the word “non-refundable.”
Here’s the deal: I require a 50% deposit upfront, no exceptions. Why? Because past me thought, “Sure, I can trust people to pay later!” Spoiler alert: Past me was very wrong. After way too many ghosting clients, surprise financial crises, and “Hey, can I pay you in monthly installments of good vibes?” situations, I learned the hard way.
This policy also keeps things moving—I give clients 45-90 days to settle up after their project is done because, fun fact, materials don’t age like fine wine. They age like milk.
It’s not just about protecting my wallet—it’s about keeping my reputation intact and not letting my work get stuck in limbo. If you’re an artist, filmmaker, or creative entrepreneur, I’m here to share my battle scars and why firm business practices are everything in this wild industry.

The Celebrity Misconception
When celebrities approach artists at conventions, their admiration for the work can feel flattering—until it becomes clear they expect it for free. As artists, what do we actually gain from giving away our hard work? Not much!

This is most often a one-sided exchange. Celebrities often assume their interest alone is payment enough for an item, but that doesn’t pay our bills.

I’ve witnessed celebrities at cons discard or hand off free art to their handlers, showing little respect for what they were just given. True appreciation comes in the form of payment or genuine promotion.

Artists, protect your worth. If you choose to offer your work in exchange for promotion, ensure it’s a mutually beneficial agreement, not a one-sided favor. And celebrities: if you truly value art, pay for it. It’s not about the money—it’s about respect.
