STRIPES OF DISTINCTION—Several Jacksboro ISD teachers and staff members earn their Stripes of Distinction during teacher appreciation week. Community members nominated those who exemplified the best at JISD, going the extra mile for their students inside and outside the classroom.

The Jacksboro Education Foundation rounded up JHS cheerleaders and the drumline Wednesday to surprise nominees with their awards, reading aloud those nomination letters from the community.

This year’s Stripes of Distinction recipients are Cally Cantrell, Hillary Deffebach, Jessica Hall, Joey Highfill, Cindi Jackson, Brittany Jackson, Karra Lanmon, Denisa Moye, Griselda Salazar, Rebekah Sams, Dickie Smith, Taylor Segoviano, Kasie Fitzsimmons, Lori Venable and Caroline Vaughn.

DAY OF PRAYER—The community came together in prayer today at Jack County Memorial Park in observance of National Day of Prayer. Those in attendance prayed for their community, local schools, churches, businesses and elected officials while also offering special prayers to military service members and their families.

Efforts to pass legislation to designate a national day of prayer in the U.S. began in the early 1950s, but it wasn’t until 1988 when President Ronald Reagan signed into law the first Thursday in May be designated as the annual National Day of Prayer.

The Jacksboro City Council amends an ordinance to now require residents and businesses to post street address numbers in a visible location outside the structure.

This change comes as local police, fire and EMS say it will improve response times during emergencies while others expressed concern about the burden it may place on some residents.

Jacksboro ISD School Board of Trustees Place 1 incumbent Travis Jonas led over opponent Tony Horn, and candidate for Jacksboro City Council Place 3 Joe Logan led over opponent Brian Isbell.

Candidate Shelley Sewell led over opponent Victor Sanchez in the special election for Jacksboro City Council Place 2.

RABIES CLINIC SATURDAY—A free rabies vaccination clinic for cats and dogs is open to the public from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 2 at the Jack County Rural Fire Station on North Street in Jacksboro. Cats must be in a carrier and dogs must be on a leash.

Sponsored by Friends of the Jacksboro Animal Shelter, city of Jacksboro and Jacksboro Fire Department, local veterinarians volunteer their time to provide the no-cost service for pets. Last year’s annual event gave 177 free rabies vaccinations. Donations are appreciated.
