On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, a gang of tennis playing rascals meet on two courts at Kiest Tennis Center to square off against each other in doubles. These guys are serious tennis players who play for keeps, one team trying in every way to outlast the other, and remain king of the hill.

Google honors Althea Gibson on her birthday.

Monday’s Google Doodle pays tribute to black tennis star and barrier breaker Althea Gibson, who paved the way for tennis greats including Venus and Serena Williams.

Gibson, who was born on Aug. 25, 1927, was the first black person to take the title at Wimbledon and the U.S. Nationals. The Harlem-raised Gibson was also the first African-American named the Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year in 1957; she won again in 1958.

Gibson died in October 2003

Longest Recorded Tennis Rally Remembered : NPR

Twenty-five year ago, tennis player Vicki Nelson-Dunbar played Jean Hepner in a 29-minute, 643-shot rally. The rally remains the longest point played in a professional tennis match. Nelson-Dunbar says the two-set match lasted 61/2 hours. She says other points in the game could have been longer.

Today on the Internet:

"When 18-year-old tennis sensation Taylor Townsend beat 21st-ranked Alize Cornet in the French Open on Wednesday, she did more than simply extend her thrilling Grand Slam debut by advancing to the third round.
The 205th-ranked Townsend's feat -- it made her the youngest U.S. woman to advance to the third round at the French Open since 2003 -- is even more impressive considering just two years ago, the U.S. Tennis Association attempted to keep her out of competition at the U.S. Open. It was suggested they would not restore their support until the teen, then the top-ranked junior player in the world, lost weight."
