Melissa Gilbert began searching for her natural parents when she was in her twenties. After several years of fruitless leads, she was finally given a phone number that belonged to David Darlington, her natural father. During their first conversation, Darlington wasted no time talking about Melissa Gilbert's celebrity status. She asked him if he had given up a daughter in 1964, he said yes. "I'm on TV," Melissa said before saying her name. "As a child I worked for ten years in a TV series and made numerous films for television."
After a break, Darlington told her he knew who he was. "As if the conversation wasn’t already weird, it became even more so when I asked about work, Michael Landon, and other celebrities," Melissa wrote in her book. "It was like talking to someone you met on the street." Darlington agreed to meet Melissa Gilbert on the day she chose.
"It was an incredible moment, one of the strangest moments I have ever experienced," Melissa wrote.
"I learned that David Darlington was a sign painter in Las Vegas, not a Rhodes Scholar as my foster mom always told me."
Melissa Gilbert also learned that Kathy, her birth mother, died in 1980 after years of complications from a serious motorcycle accident shortly after Melissa Gilbert was born.
Melissa went to Darlington's for dinner that night. There, her sister told her more about the history of her origin family, "which included an alarming amount of alcoholism and cancer".
The visit wasn't how Melissa Gilbert dreamed it to be. "There was no meaningful discussion about my origins and my first twenty-four hours in the world."
She returned to her hotel room, cried, and called her foster mom who told her, “This is part of your journey, Melissa. You had to do it for yourself. And now you have. You can do what you want with what you know. The most important thing is that you can.

Landon casts nine-year-old Melissa Gilbert to play the young Laura Ingalls and her brother Jonathan to play the role of Willie Oleson. I'll be writing four more pairs of siblings to play different roles, including two sets of twins who shared parts.

It was during the month of February 1878 that Charles Ingalls rented land in Walnut Grove in the Master’s family pasture. They had returned from their time in Burr Oak, Iowa and were now back in Minnesota trying to make a go of it. Charles was planning on settling down on this property and plans were even made to return to it after his railroad contract was concluded. It was the offer of free rent in the Surveyors’ House and the subsequent filing of a homestead claim that moved the family to the Dakota’s.

Mary Amelia Ingalls was born on a cold January 10, 1865, in a small cabin in Pepin County, Wisconsin, to parents Charles and Caroline Ingalls. Little did they know, Mary’s story would forever be tied to the pages of literature through her younger sister, Laura. Mary was a quiet and obedient child with a sharp mind and an insatiable curiosity. She loved reading, sewing, and writing poetry, and her world was full of warmth from her family and the playful moments shared with her sisters, Laura, Carrie, and Grace.
However, everything changed in the summer of 1879 when Mary fell gravely ill at the age of 14. Intense fevers left her bedridden, and when the fever finally subsided, she discovered a new, devastating reality: she had lost her sight. Her family, although supportive, couldn’t change the fact that the disease had left her blind. Her sister, Laura, became her eyes, reading to her, describing the world around them, and helping her continue her studies. Despite this dramatic shift, Mary remained determined to overcome the challenges that came with her blindness.
In 1881, Mary enrolled in the Iowa College for the Blind, where she spent seven years studying literature, mathematics, science, and even learning practical skills like weaving and broom-making. She became a cultured, independent, and resilient woman. After graduating in 1889, Mary returned to De Smet, where she lived with her family, finding joy in music, reading, and sewing. Though she never married, Mary found fulfillment in her simple life, surrounded by her loving family. After her mother’s death in 1924, Mary continued to live with her sisters until her passing in 1928. Though her life was overshadowed by her sister Laura’s fame, Mary’s legacy lives on in the pages of *Little House on the Prairie*, where her spirit remains alongside her beloved sister.
