Review 1

When a house CD seeks to understand the African soul, it needs to adhere to one condition; it must allow for the beats to tell stories. Africa is a continent rich with history and culture that has transcended from folklore and tradition. Afrodesia MP3 CD does just that. It tells an interwoven story from young African DJs all wrapped up into 2 fantastic African products by established DJs Christos and Static Plastic.

The first CD compilation encompasses the heart pumping soul of solid beats. The progression of the CD from The Phoenix – Bang Her, which sets the tone for the first CD, gradually advances into the melodic and rhythmic tunes of Andy X – Freedom which allows for just that; the freedom to move. The vocals of the Andy X’s track augments to the African love of vocal appreciation.

With elements of deep tribal and funky house in the first CD, the second CD takes on the personae of re-invention, combining new and fresh sounds both organic and electronic elements to close of a fantastic compilation. The compilation is all a cultural journey closed off quite poetically by DJ Modi – Dance is Kulcha.

African house music can be compared to modern day appreciation of the African lifestyle which is a diverse understanding of the influences of nature and industry. This CD is a testament that African house is destined for great things. The compilation can be enjoyed in the comfort of your own home or in the car on you way to a club (which is ultimately the best place to showcase this CD). Viva L’Afro.

Review 2

AfrodesiaMP3 deserves a lot of credit for taking the crucial role of resonating South African urban music to the international ear. It has over the years become a global and local marketplace for the freshest and hottest dance tracks in the country, creating opportunities for local artist to break through and possibly draw much-needed international recognition.

Afrodesia MP3 Platform 1 was mixed by DJ Christos and Static Plastic, perfectly reflects the style and a sense of professionalism that typify Afrodesia productions. The compilation CD totals 28 tracks in double CD format.

On this one, Christos and Static Plastic have fused works from various artists in the industry, featuring the unmistakable sounds of Zonke, DJ Funky T, The Phoenix, Daddy, DJ Elevator and a lot of artists you have probably heard before.

The package has some nice stuff to offer, it embodies the flavorful vibe of South African house music, but the most outstanding part is its superb sound quality. This is the major magnetic force of the album which actually carries very little lyrical muscle. However, I was not so impressed with the first CD which is just a marathon of open instrumentals that I found not strong enough to generate hype without some sort of vocal accompaniment.

But all that is compensated on the second CD. The leadoff track, “I Surrender” completely changes the mood, introducing for the first time; vocals, a new fresh feeling and a pleasant timbre. With pulsating- but- chilled basses spiced up with phat- but- carefully monitored unique sounds, the track undoubtedly baits any music enthusiast to the album.

Track number 11, 'Cafe of Chocolate' is one of those rump shakers that thrill fans and gets dance floors packed, especially Jozi joints. It’s a real strong track and, in my opinion, the one deserving of most radio attention.

This is definitely a must-grab, especially at this time of the year when the festive season party madness draws closer.

The term 'House Nation' could have been coined specifically for South Africa, where house music has played an integral role in the country's cultural history. Per capita, South Africa has the biggest house music market in the world; additionally the genre's 120 BPM, straight-ahead kick was a major building block in the chart-ruling kwaito wave, and the style's message of peace, love, unity and having fun has played a serious role in post-Apartheid reconciliation.

House Afrika Records has already released half-a-dozen collections celebrating house music's early 90’s heyday - a golden section in the story of local music as well as the narrative of the country itself - but this is the first that is piloted by Static Plastic, undoubtedly one of the era's heroes. There are few figures as qualified to record this crucial and funky juncture, and with 'Around The House', he's turned in a history lesson that's altogether relevant: one that can still stand up to the demands of the most discerning dancefloor.

As house music's magnetic hold has spread wider over the past twenty years, discerning dancefloors have been in shorter supply. Static Plastic concedes that, 'House is now a big genre, but people are losing the true essence of what it's about.' With the music's original intent and defining elements becoming more diluted, 'Around The House' acts as a timely intervention, and the compiler hopes that 'these classics show people where house really came from.'

Static Plastic (formerly known as DJ Static P) has performed a pivotal part in the development and firm entrenchment of house in South Africa in his capacity as DJ, producer/remixer and masterer extraordinaire.

From the vantage point of the DJ booth, he played at the first raves and bashes, and was resident spinner at legendary venue, 4th World. As rhythm creator, his 2 DJs & a Keyboard Player releases and 'Slow Jams' series are amongst kwaito's prototype projects, and he’s contributed to the sprawling local dance landscape by producing albums for Sharon Dee, Daddy and many others, as well as remixing material for Jeff Maluleke, Brenda Fassie and the UK's Sick Trumpet label. From deep behind the scenes, Static has mastered a massive proportion of the largest dance albums and compilations of the last decade.

This array of accomplishments and his unmatched experience on the frontline of South African ‘floors (not to mention his enviable record collection) coalesce on this impeccable compilation. And as proof of Static Plastic's staying power, the CD borrows its name from his current residency. Around The House (headed up by long-playing promoter Lilo) happens at Newtown's Fuel Café, in the heart of Johannesburg, on Friday evenings and is the city's most essential night, with a multi-faceted crowd and an uncompromising music policy that continues the legacy Static Plastic laid down at the start of the 90s.

The bulk of this disc’s cuts are drawn from that important period and include subterranean tunes from a number of producers still making the grade in the 21st century. Just as Static Plastic continues to recalibrate underground sound on projects like Oracle (a collaboration with African music archivist Robin Hogarth) and Oracle (his new Afro-house vehicle), the likes of Kerri Chandler (who’s responsible for three tunes on the CD under his various guises) and Oscar ‘G’ Gaetan (of Murk Productions fame) are still delivering devastating goods nearly two decades later.

It was their early efforts though that set the tone for the way we dance today; that impacted the market and made it into the opulent playing field that it's become, and that inspired a generation of eager youngsters to follow the funk and harness technology's potential to express themselves and motivate others to move. The benchmark tracks on 'Around The House' are fondly remembered but have languished on old school DJ’s shelves for years, collecting dust.

Now revived and remastered, they're once again warming hearts, widening minds and willing bodies to dance: memorable master strokes for a new millennium...

Press Release:

https://sonymusicafrica.wordpress.com/2011/06/08/house-afrika-grooves-seasons-recordings-press-release/

Seasons Recordings is an essential deep house and garage label based in the USA and run by Jamie Thinnes, and it’s been making a serious impact in South Africa for a number of years. Now it’s set to explode with the release of the second instalment in the ‘House Afrika Grooves’ series: four CDs devoted to the finest output from this class stable.

Seasons and its sister label Seasons Ltd. have hosted some of the most highly-rated house acts on the planet: floor-fillers like Franck Roger, DJ Spinna, JT Donaldson, Boddhi Satva, Chez Damier and Charles Webster. And lately it’s become increasingly Afrocentric, with Thinnes teaming up with Halo to put together ‘Platform 2’, a selection of some devastating African dance music cuts.

Seasons have also recently enlisted the SA skills of acts like Black Coffee, Trancemicsoul and Tshwane’s Magic Soul (who’ve just remixed Distant People ft. Rainy Payne) to jack up their catalogue, so this release feels like a natural next step, and it’ll certainly seal their status down South.

It features a quartet of quality explorations into the Seasons back-catalogue segued by label boss Thinnes, local scene stalwarts Static Plastic and Kanunu and scorching newcomer Essential I. All four mixes embody the Seasons ethos: “consistent, quality house music based on an unshakeable foundation of musicality, soulful delivery and infectious grooves.”

Jamie Thinnes needs little introduction, having been at the helm of Seasons and its sub-label (and over 100 titles) over the past 15 years. Kanunu is one of House Afrika’s most revered representatives, having helped seal the “Tshwane Sound” in local dancefloor lore and pioneering the midtempo movement at the start of the millennium. Static Plastic is a legendary DJ and producer responsible for mastering a vast chunk of the greatest SA grooves of the past couple of decades.

The new and exciting face on the block is Essential I who’s been establishing himself with partner Mindlo for a while, but who’s hit stratospheric house heights lately since reworking Black Coffee and Zakes Bantwini’s massive “Juju” and 60 Hertz’s “Capricorn”. The latter was licensed to Ralf GUM’s GOGO Music (and appeared with remixes by GUM himself and QB Smith) and is fast becoming one of the funk phenomena of 2012, slipping into the bags of Rocco, Christos and Vinny Da Vinci – and remaining there.

In the face of so much throwaway thump, all four of these mixes (Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall, if you like) capture the jazzy, soulful and heads-down, late-night ethic of a label that’s stuck to its guns – and stuck to a doctrine of deep.
