*Parliament to take final decision on UCC, Waqf issues: CM Omar Abdullah*

: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said it is Parliament which will take a final call on the Uniform Civil Code and the Waqf (amendment) bill.

Uttarakhand on Monday became the first state to implement UCC with the ruling BJP fulfilling a major commitment made ahead of the 2022 assembly polls, while the Joint Parliamentary Committee scrutinising the Waqf (Amendment) Bill adopted all amendments proposed by the ruling BJP-led NDA members and negated every change moved by opposition members.

"Let them do what they want to do till a law is enacted for the country. Finally, it is Parliament which will decide on this and not the individual UTs or States," Abdullah told reporters here, reacting to the implementation of the UCC in Uttarakhand.

In response to another question related to the Waqf bill, he said the parliamentary committee is still holding discussions and the government is not implementing any law.

In the recent past, Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq met the committee and put forth his view point.

"Let the committee completes its work, then Parliament will discuss its report," the chief minister said.

on Monday became the first state in the country to implement the Uniform Civil Code with the ruling BJP fulfilling a major commitment made ahead of the 2022 Assembly polls.

The UCC came into force as Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami unveiled its notification, released the rules for its implementation and launched a portal created for the mandatory online registration of marriages, divorce and live-in relationships.

The event took place in the auditorium at Dhami’s official residence called “Mukhya Sevak Sadan” in the presence of his ministerial colleagues and a host of senior officials.

“The UCC, creating equal laws for every citizen across all religions, comes fully into effect at this moment. The credit for it goes entirely to the people of the state,” Dhami said at the function.

It is an instrument to put an end to all discriminatory practices against women regardless of their religion, he said.

It marks a historic moment as Uttarakhand is the first state in independent India to bring into effect a UCC, modelled basically upon the vision of a single set of laws applying to all citizens, regardless of their religion as enshrined in Article 44 of the Constitution.

It is also the fulfilment of a major pre-poll promise made by Dhami to the people of the state at the time of the 2022 Assembly polls which saw the BJP retaining power for a second consecutive term, a feat never achieved by any other party in the state since its creation in 2000.

On several occasions, Dhami has attributed the historic mandate to the party’s commitment to the electorate about bringing a UCC if voted to power for the second time in a row.

As soon as Dhami formed the government again in March 2022, the state cabinet at its very first meeting chaired by him cleared a proposal for the formation of an expert committee to draft it.

An expert committee headed by retired Supreme Court Judge Ranjana Prakash Desai was constituted on May 27, 2022, to prepare the draft of the UCC.

The panel headed by Desai submitted a comprehensive draft of the UCC prepared after a prolonged dialogue with a cross-section of people to the state government on February 2, 2024.

A legislation on it was passed a few days later by the state Assembly on February 7. It was given president’s assent nearly a month later paving the way for its implementation.

An expert committee headed by former chief secretary Shatrughan Singh, who was also a part of the drafting committee to frame the rules and regulations for the implementation of the Act, submitted its report to the state government late last year.

The state cabinet gave its approval to the report recently and authorised the chief minister to decide a date for its implementation.

Naseem Liaqat for his exceptional leadership and tireless efforts in managing the recent health emergency in Badhal, Block Kandi. The felicitation ceremony, held in the presence of MLA Rajouri Sh. Iftikhar Ahmed, MLA Thanamandi-Darhal Adv. Muzaffar Khan, DIG Rajouri-Poonch Range Sh.Tajinder Singh IPS Deputy Commissioner Rajouri Sh. Abhishekh Sharma, SSP Rajouri Sh.Gourav Shikarwar IPS, ADDC Rajouri Dr.Raj Kumar Thapa , ADC Rajouri Sh.Rajeev Khajuria , and other dignitaries, highlighted the critical role played by Dr. Rana and the Health Department in containing the crisis*.

Dr. Rana received this recognition for his extraordinary efforts in managing and controlling the recent health emergency in Badhal, Block Kandi, which claimed 17 lives. Under his leadership, the Health Department Rajouri swiftly deployed Rapid Response Teams (RRTs), strengthened CHC Kandi, ensured referrals to GMC Rajouri and Jammu, and conducted extensive surveillance and public awareness campaigns to prevent further escalation.

They lauded Dr. Rana and the entire Health Department for their tireless work in mitigating the crisis, demonstrating exemplary coordination with the civil administration and allied departments.

The event highlighted the invaluable contributions of healthcare workers under the leadership of Dr.Rana in serving the community with dedication and resilience.

*House Searches continue in Greater Kailash Murder Case*

Continuing in its resolve to get to the roots of crime, Jammu Police today on 09.05.2024 conducted simultaneous raids at three locations of the accused and their known associates in the Greater Kailash Murder Case.

These three searches were conducted on court orders in the houses of Sheikh Mehmood at Channi, Purshotam Singh at Bishnah and at the house of the driver of Ravinder Gupta at Gangyal.

In the raids being conducted so far, more than 60 documents related to land deals and sale along with several digital devices have been seized for further analysis.

It is also important to note that the driver of Ravinder Gupta has been closely associated with him for the last several years, allegedly becoming a conduit for ill-gotten gains.
