The President is referring to a November 13 letter The New York Times sent out to it's readers following the election. The Times used the letter to reflect on the outcome of the election but no where in it was an apology for their coverage. There is also no evidence that they were forced to apologise. The letter can be read in its entirety below:

To Our Readers, From the Publisher and Executive Editor

NOVEMBER 13, 2016
When the biggest political story of the year reached a dramatic and unexpected climax late Tuesday night, our newsroom turned on a dime and did what it has done for nearly two years — cover the 2016 election with agility and creativity.

After such an erratic and unpredictable election there are inevitable questions: Did Donald Trump’s sheer unconventionality lead us and other news outlets to underestimate his support among American voters? What forces and strains in America drove this divisive election and outcome? Most important, how will a president who remains a largely enigmatic figure actually govern when he takes office?

As we reflect on the momentous result, and the months of reporting and polling that preceded it, we aim to rededicate ourselves to the fundamental mission of Times journalism. That is to report America and the world honestly, without fear or favor, striving always to understand and reflect all political perspectives and life experiences in the stories that we bring to you. It is also to hold power to account, impartially and unflinchingly. You can rely on The New York Times to bring the same fairness, the same level of scrutiny, the same independence to our coverage of the new president and his team.

We cannot deliver the independent, original journalism for which we are known without the loyalty of our readers. We want to take this opportunity, on behalf of all Times journalists, to thank you for that loyalty.

Sincerely,

Arthur Sulzberger Jr., publisher

Dean Baquet, executive editor

From the Washington Post:

President Trump on Saturday morning ripped into a federal judge's decision to temporarily block enforcement of his controversial travel ban.

"When a country is no longer able to say who can, and who cannot , come in & out, especially for reasons of safety &.security — big trouble!" Trump posted on Twitter.

The tweets came hours after a federal judge in Washington state temporarily blocked enforcement of Trump’s ban on entry to the United States.

Following the Friday-night ruling, government authorities immediately began communicating with airlines and taking steps that would allow travel by those previously barred from doing so, according to a U.S. official.

An update on a previous post of ours. It's been brought to our attention that part of The Presidents tweet here is false. The refugees coming from Papua New Guinea and Nauru are not illegal.

From The Independent:

Critics quickly pointed out that the men, women and children to be resettled could not be illegal when their transfers had been organised and facilitated by the US government.

To be defined as an illegal immigrant, people must have violated a country’s laws by either crossing the border irregularly or overstaying their visas.

This is true. The United States and Australia came to a one off resettlement agreement back in November for the U.S. to accept over 1,000 refugees held on the island nations of Nauru and Papua New Guinea after trying to reach Australia by boat.

From Al Jazeera on November 15, 2016:

Australia has reached a resettlement deal with the United States for refugees who are being held in offshore prisons after having tried to reach Australia by boat.

The Obama administration had agreed to resettle refugees among a group of almost 1,300 people held at on the island nations of Nauru and Papua New Guinea. Rights groups have been scathing about conditions at the prison camps.

Another 370 who came to Australia for medical treatment and then refused to return to the islands would also be eligible.

"I can now confirm that the government has reached a further third-country resettlement arrangement for refugees presently in the regional processing centres. The agreement is with the United States," Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told a press conference in Canberra on Friday.

We're just calling it what you and your administration has been calling it Mr. President...

From the Washington Post:

White House press secretary Sean Spicer had a message for the news media at a briefing Tuesday: You guys caused the confusion about the Trump administration's new temporary travel ban ... by calling it a travel “ban.”

“It's not a ban,” Spicer said.

At least, that's what he said Tuesday. On Monday, he used the term himself. At an appearance at George Washington University, he said that “the ban deals with seven countries that the Obama administration had previously identified as needing further travel restrictions.”

He wasn't the only member of the Trump team to embrace the word:

Trump also called it a “ban” on Saturday, saying “We're going to have a very, very strict ban, and we're going to have extreme vetting, which we should have had in this country for many years.” And Kellyanne Conway used the b-word Sunday, saying, "This is a ban on travel, prospective travel from countries, trying to prevent terrorists in this country..."

So four times in three days.

Although print media in general has seen a decrease through the years due to the rise of social media, mobile technology, and web based platforms we have found no info to support the President's claims here.

In fact, digital subscriptions for both publications have increased since Election day.

From Fortune:

"The New York Times confirmed to Fortune on Tuesday that the newspaper saw an increase of roughly 132,000 paid subscriptions to its print and digital editions over the period between the Nov. 8 election and this past Saturday. Times spokeswoman Eileen Murphy said that increase (first reported on Tuesday by CNBC) “represents a dramatic rate of growth”—10-times more than during the same period last year and the paper’s largest two-and-a-half week increase since introducing its digital pay model in 2011."

From Digiday:

"How The Washington Post grew digital subscriptions 145 percent"

"The Washington Post has shown its ability to make big traffic gains, aggressively embracing social platforms like Facebook and pumping out more viral video fare. Last year, it made a big show of surpassing The New York Times in traffic, with multiplatform uniques now at 63 million, up 32 percent year over year, according to comScore."

"Digital-only subs have grown 145 percent year-over-year, mostly coming from the U.S. outside of D.C. and including a “significant” portion from overseas, according to Beth Diaz, vp of audience development and analytics"

https://www.google.com/amp/digiday.com/publishers/washington-post-grew-digital-subscriptions-145-percent/amp/

From CNN:

"The New York Times has added 41,000 paid subscriptions across its print and digital platforms in the week since the presidential election, representing the largest subscription increase since it introduced its pay-wall in 2011.
The surge, undoubtedly influenced by Donald Trump's historic victory and the resulting anxieties of many Americans, is a boon to an organization that has been beset in recent years with declining advertising revenue and staff reductions."

The President is referring to a tweet sent out by VoteStand founder Greg Phillips back in November of 2016. Phillips has been quiet since last year and has offered no evidence to back up his claims.

VoteStand is an electronic fraud reporting app available on iOS and Android.

From PolitiFact in November:

"Phillips would not provide any additional information when asked by PolitiFact. He said he has chosen not to release more information because he is still working on analyzing the data and verifying its accuracy. Phillips would also not say what the data is or where it came from, or what methodology he used.

Phillips said he would release the information publicly once he is finally finished.

According to his page on LinkedIn, Phillips is a former finance director of the Alabama Republican Party. He also served as executive director of the Mississippi Republican Party and was managing director of a super PAC that supported Newt Gingrich’s 2012 campaign for president."
