Students at North Oconee High School placed 2,977 American flags in the front lawn of the school today. Each flag honors one victim who lost their life in the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

North Oconee carries out this tradition each year. State Rep. Houston Gaines (R-117th District) also visited the school to observe the tradition.

“It’s so important that young people in particular have events like this to remember and honor the victims who were lost in 9/11 and also honor the first responders who went head first into the tragedy,” Gaines said.

Steven Colquitt, director of communications for Oconee County Schools, said the students' efforts were a "powerful testament" to the impact of 9/11.

"Placing these flags is an incredible way to ensure that these men and women will never be forgotten," Colquitt said.
