Thursday Devotional-Will The Real Man Of God Please Stand Up?

“And when the messengers returned to him, he said to them, “Why have you come back?” So they said to him, “A man came up to meet us, and said to us, ‘Go, return to the king who sent you, and say to him, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending to inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you shall not come down from the bed to which you have gone up, but you shall surely die.” Then he said to them, “What kind of man was it who came up to meet you and told you these words?” So they answered him, “A hairy man wearing a leather belt around his waist.” And he said, “It is Elijah the Tishbite.””
— ‭‭II Kings‬ ‭1‬:‭5‬-‭8‬‬

If you are a fan of hide and seek, then you will be familiar with this. In 1987, an English illustrator named Martin Handford created a popular children’s puzzle. This puzzle was the ultimate version of hide and seek, attempting to locate a single man. Though the man was easy to identify in his red and white striped shirt, it would be difficult to do so, as he would be hidden in the midst of a massive crowd. The man’s name: Waldo. The game: Where’s Waldo? Not only was this game popular amongst children, but it would also became popular amongst adults, as they too would seek to search out and for the iconic champion of hide and seek. Waldo was easily identifiable, hard to seek, but once you find him, you won’t forget it. In light of this, think about Elijah, who was a man and prophet of God. A man easily identifiable by appearance, but also identifiable by his life. In a time and age where the majority completely overwhelm the minority, Elijah was different. If others asked the question where is the man of God in those days, everyone knew who that person was talking about, particularly in that time where in a midst of a massive crowd of Israelites, only a few were truly living for and following God. In light of this, think of the Christian. Consider and examine yourself. A man or woman who has been redeemed, and is walking in the midst of a crowd. Like Waldo, or even like Elijah the Tishbite/Man of God, are you easily identifiable? Can others point you out as a man or woman who is living for and walking with God in the midst of a massive crowd? More importantly, could God pick you out of a crowd, as He said to Satan about Job (Job 1:8)? I encourage you today to be one who stands out as you walk wholeheartedly with Jesus. Easily identifiable not just by appearance, but particularly by authenticity.

Thursday Devotional-Be An Example

“Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”
— ‭‭1 Timothy‬ ‭4:12‬ ‭KJV‬‬

My encouragement, my prayer, and my exhortation: Be an example. DL Moody said this: Out of 100 men, 1 will read the Bible. The other 99 will read the Christian. When interviewed by a Christian, Gandhi said “I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” A scary and poignant statement, but one that must be heard. I’m not talking about perfection, for we will never be perfect in this world. What I am encouraging, exhorting and praying for is consistency and authenticity. May we be living Gospels to a world that is not just searching for authenticity, but screaming for it as well. Be that example today, at your job, at your church, in your homes, in public and in private. You have a world that is watching and waiting.

Thursday Devotional-“Fruit” For Thought

“And the name of the second called he Ephraim: For God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction.”
— ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭41:52‬‬

I want to give you some “ Fruit” For Thought this morning. Not Food For Thought. “Fruit” For Thought. Still lost? Read on and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Is there purpose for your pain?? What is this affliction accomplishing?? “It only seems to get worse, not better. Doesn’t God care? Doesn’t God know? Doesn’t God see?” Reading through Genesis, particularly the life of Joseph, I can’t help but to be encouraged by the name of his second child. His name, as you know, is Ephraim, and its meaning is simple: fruitful. His name would be a testimony to the life of Joseph. So every time Joseph would call Ephraim, he would be reminded, “Lord, in my affliction, you brought forth fruitfulness.” Not just in the offspring, but through every trial. When he was in prison, when he was in the pit, when he was in Potiphar’s house, fruit was being brought forth in those moments, all for the purpose that God had planned for him all along. For Joseph, it was years before he ever found this out. But all along the Lord was with him. So is there purpose for your pain? Is affliction accomplishing something? Does God have a plan within it? Yes, yes and yes. Every time you read Ephraim, be reminded of the fruit that was brought forth in Joseph’s life. Take heart and be reminded of the testimony of God in those years: You brought me here for this place and this purpose.

Some “fruit” for thought today.

Thursday Devotional-Just A Herdsman

“Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit: And the Lord took me as I followed the flock, and the Lord said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.”
— ‭‭Amos‬ ‭7:14-15‬‬

We all get asked the question, if there was one person from history that I would want to talk to, who would it be? We all have a long list. But if there would be one person out of that long list of people I would want to talk, Amos would definitely be on that list. I would want to say that Amos was a minor prophet that made a major impact with his prophecy, or Amos was, as J Vernon McGee in his commentary says: “…God’s man delivering God’s message…”. All of which is true, but I just simply say this: Amos was just an ordinary man like you and I. Amos was a man that wasn’t special, or one which you would say would be the first man or individual that everyone would line up to talk to. Amos was just a herdsmen, just a laborer, just an ordinary man walking with God. Yet, this ordinary man with no prophetical pedigree (not a prophet or son of a prophet), this herdsman, this gatherer of fruit was called to be God’s man in this time and for this opportunity. That’s a man I can relate to. That’s a man we can relate to. A man who walks with God so close and so much that he is invited into a task bigger than him, and God uses him in a mighty way. That’s the man I want to seek to be. I pray that this is who you would desire to be. This is the person, even the individual, that I am praying each of you will become.

Thursday Devotional-A Dry And Thirsty Land

“O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; To see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.”
— ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭63:1-2‬‬

Forty days in the wilderness was Jesus. Physically hungry, physically fatigued. Feeling every attack from Satan. Could you imagine the words of Psalm 63 illuminating and ministering to Jesus in that time? It’s amazing how even before Jesus was born, David writes this looking towards the coming of Christ. He himself being in the wilderness, longing so much more for the sanctuary than the wilderness, because it was there where the presence of God felt real and near. So much more to discover that as near and real as He is in the sanctuary, even so it is true in the wilderness. There have been days where it has felt like a wilderness. How do you know? Well has there been a time you where the presence of God didn’t feel near and real? Then I would guess that would be the wilderness, because you could never imagine God meeting you where you are whether it is in the driest place or the worst circumstances. Sanctuary, yes, wilderness, no. But there is a reason why Jesus is the Lily of the Valley, the Wellspring of Life, and the Living Water. Even in the wilderness, He can and will meet you there, as He has in the sanctuary. I don’t know where you are today, but take heart in knowing that as Jesus came and met you before in your sinfulness, He can and will come and meet you in your situation, whatever it may be. It may take a day or a week in the wilderness to get you to acknowledge His presence, His power, and His promise. But take heart in knowing that He will meet you there.
