The U.S. Drought Monitor (USDM) monthly changes and impacts are back! Check out what the August 2025 USDM says:
🚨 On August 5, below-average precipitation and episodes of unusually hot weather, low humidity, and high winds led to large areas of deterioration in the central and northern Rockies.
🚨 On August 12, short-term rainfall shortages intensified and conditions worsened over much of the Lower Mississippi Valley, Ohio Valley, Tennessee Valley, Northeast, and parts of the Deep South, southern Plains, central Arizona, and the central Rockies.
🚨 On August 19, in the Western region, severe to exceptional drought (D2–D4) remained widespread across California, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico, while hot, dry weather pushed drought to expand in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. These conditions fueled large wildfires, particularly in California and the Southwest, where dry vegetation and gusty winds created dangerous fire behavior.
🚨 On August 21, Hurricane Erin passed about 200 miles east of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, with minimal weather impacts (an extended period of Atlantic coastal impacts, such as life-threatening surf and higher-than-normal tides) aside from gusty winds along portions of the Atlantic Seaboard.
🚨 On August 26, cooler air arrived in the North and soon reached all areas east of the Rockies, except for the northern High Plains and the Deep South.
