Pan Macmillan We publish a broad and vibrant range of books for audiences of all ages. G. Wells. B. P. Snow and Rumer Godden.

Macmillan was founded in 1843 by Daniel and Alexander Macmillan, two brothers from the Scottish Isle of Arran. Daniel was the business brain, while Alexander laid the literary foundations, publishing such great authors as Charles Kingsley, Thomas Hughes, Lewis Carroll, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Henry James, Thomas Hardy, Rudyard Kipling and H. As the company evolved, the Macmillan family's vision cont

inued to inspire the publishing of major writers including W. Yeats, Sean O'Casey, John Maynard Keynes, Charles Morgan, Hugh Walpole, Margaret Mitchell, C. The brothers' publishing talents were not confined to literature. Their vision led to the creation of enduring copyrights such as Nature (1869), the renowned Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (1877) and Palgrave's Dictionary of Political Economy (1899). An ambitious expansion programme was initiated in the late 1960s when Harold Macmillan retired from politics after his term as prime minister and became chairman of the company. Serious academic, educational and literary publishing was followed by significant growth in reference programmes and college textbooks as well as educational and scientific journals. New international opportunities were grasped and publishing operations were set up in Japan, Mexico and the emerging markets of Africa and Asia. Nowadays Macmillan is one of the largest and best-known international publishers in the world, operating in over 70 countries.

It's not unusual to reread a book you enjoyed as a child and discover a whole new layer of meaning that had passed your younger self by. Similarly, going back to a book you disliked at an earlier age will often yield a new appreciation. Four reads that are like fine wine: they taste different with age.

Some of the Pan Macmillan team take a turn around the office and make the case for their favourite of her novels.

"There’s an expectation that motherhood comes after the wild years – after the big, crazy adventures when life settles down. But I had other ideas. . ."

We're thrilled to be publishing ! When the call of the wild became too strong for East London teacher, Kate Barron, her journey led her on incredible adventures from South America to the dangerous terrains of Afghanistan. Then one day, on a clifftop in Scotland, fate struck when she crossed paths with fellow adventurer Chris Lewis (bestselling author of 'Finding Hildasay').

This chance meeting became a love story of epic proportions as together the couple walked the UK’s entire coastline for the armed forces charity SSAFA, learning valuable lessons about herself - and then motherhood - along the way.

is a testament to living fearlessly, fostering curiosity and embracing life’s uncertainties.
