Grab yo ankles + get ready, bc *BOHICA! = Ok, before we go staring longingly into the red toilet bowl image + reading the word EXPLOSIVE, allow me to state my mantra = I don't care how many form, I'm caring about how many can hit, so treat it like EVERY other hurricane season = WAR is an acronym, We Are Ready! = be mindful of the situation of a storm + do the prep work, evac plans, etc = this in lieu of us transitioning from El Niño to La Niña, so the shear component lessens allowing for easier vertical structuring, but bc we are in sorta uncharted territory with the ocean warming temps, the fuel for the engines = we gotta monitor any outstanding anomalous characteristics like how soon they might appear + how fast a storm may mature into the Categories or even speed the system = lots of variables to still consider, but none we aren't familiar with = we may learn something new this season = my new phrase is insight prevents incite. This coming at the heel of the National Hurricane Conference.

So, story time...

I don't have an impressive story as to why I became a meteorologist = I had just graduated high school, and felt I knew everything about aviation (was I wrong), so there I sat on a plateau in Los Angeles watching planes in the distance, and saw a cloud. I never understood the process of weather, so I called my mom to drive me to the bookstore in Inglewood (no, I didn't have my driver's license, yet...ask me how cool I was), where I bought my first meteorology book. I was hooked, bc I understood the concepts that were introduced to me in physics = fluid and gas dynamics + aerodynamics = high pressure, low pressure, compression, barometers (which is what the altimeter is) = I studied Earth Science at my junior college, then transferred to Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida, where I put my foot up it's...ah, got knee deep in my studies, making it my minor = next to flying, I loved it, bc I was good at it. When I became a counselor at the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, I found a knack for educating science hungry younglings = the kids were more fascinated by it than the curriculum, so I had daily weather reports given by team members to their squad every morning. Now, I use social media to keep people aware, but moderate an adult FB group, The Weather Pimp, where I take my knowledge to get medieval on it's...whoops, there I go again, where I go in depth on all things real meteorological, keeping it real. See, no tornado hitting my house or lightning striking my dog on a walk or hail being ingested by my jet engine causing a flameout (it just put cracks in my canopy shooting out the top of a towering cumulus cloud from 5mi away like popcorn!) stories. I just saw a cloud.

Happy World Meteorological Day...

Today is World Meteorological Day 2024! This year the World Meteorological Organization is focusing on work “At the Frontline of Climate Action” by utilizing hydrometeorological and climate information for early warning, early action, and disaster risk reduction. We say storms, like they are bad = weather is neither good nor bad, it just is. The farmlands are in a bout with drought, so these storms will be welcomed, but the potential severity is what most aren't a fan of.

An active pattern is going to produce a big-time spring storm system for most of the country with some huge snowfall totals, potential blizzard conditions, freezing rain, strong winds and a risk of severe weather. It is going to be a busy few days, weatherwise.

The ol switcheroo = transitioning towards La Niña, add this to the ingredients of the hurricane season brew that's fermenting = warm waters + projected less shear + will the Bermuda high be strong or weak? + will we see an active Saharan Air Layer? = we are sorta on the cusp of territory new to us due to the warming factor. We shall see...

No that's not the Death Star = Apr08 eclipse, models projecting a very decent view over the west = Texas skies are looking incredible, as the eclipse seems to coming at the heels of an active system with conditions, seemingly, improving along the path. We shall see...

The rain coming in Friday night and Saturday is great news for the fire situation in western Virginia and eastern West Virginia. The rain should mostly put these out.

Here's what the fire southwest of Luray, Va. looked like on Thursday as photographed by Hugh Kenny and shared in our Flickr group.

(While we booed the rain earlier because it is canceling some outdoor activities and events in the area, that was a mistake. It is of course much more important we get this rain now!!!)

The Pacific is packing big time = delivering a conveyor belt of moisture = aaaaand, there's plenty of more = this won't be the last. Buckle up, buttercups, January is looking soggy.

While the atmospheric river garners headlines, there are other factors associated with this potentially historic California storm.

From the atmospheric playbook...

This week's prominent pattern will push that continental polar air down = dropping temps + squeezing isobars + drying out the atmosphere along it's eastern trek.
