"No one imagined the process would reveal one of the most remarkable and internationally significant archaeological discoveries in Scotland" ⚽️

When Angus Council approved the development of two new football pitches in Carnoustie, GUARD Archaeology Ltd began investigating the site, which had been identified as having potential for hitherto unknown archaeology buried below the soil 👷‍♀️

GUARD went on to uncover the largest early Neolithic timber hall ever discovered in Scotland, dating from near 4000 BC.

Experts say the site was a focal point for festivities for Scotland’s first farming communities some 6,000 years ago 🕺

And that's not all: the archaeologists also found a "rare and well-preserved metalwork hoard" of later Bronze Age artefacts which had been "buried in haste and lost or forgotten": https://www.guard-archaeology.co.uk/GALNews/

Another excellent piece connected with Scotland's religious built heritage in the Press & Journal this week, this time sharing news of the community efforts to buy the historic Arbuthnott Church from the Church of Scotland.

Frieda Morrison, the director of Scots Radio, who recently visited the church with our local church recorders, is quoted as saying:

"Our physical heritage, like the kirk at Arbuthnott, is an important part of the north-east's cultural landscape. It anchors us to the key factors of who we are and from where we came. It shapes our identity and the work of Lewis Grassic Gibbon is intrinsically linked to that.

"Projects which strive to bring people together with the common aim of saving, restoring and repurposing buildings such as this kirk are to be congratulated for their part in safeguarding identity, and a sense of place for generations to come."

We could not agree more

The Doric Board acknowledges the Scottish Parliament's vote unanimously in favour of the Scottish Languages Bill which officially recognises Gaelic and Scots as our legal languages alongside English.

Ministers have expressed their confidence in the Bill's ability to accelerate the growth of Scots (and Gaelic), and this underlines the importance of The Doric Board's work towards the creation and support of a sustainable, dynamic future for Doric as a vibrant language. Our aim, through advocacy, campaigning, education, events and funding, is to enhance linguistic and cultural confidence in the North-East, and be a powerful voice for social, and economic regeneration.

Whilst cautiously optimistic, we will continue to monitor the progress of the Bill and strive to ensure that the Doric voice is heard loud and clear at all levels of the decision-making process.
