Fresh from his work on the new Who Are You Super Deluxe Edition, Matt Kent will be joining us for an exclusive Zoom interview on Friday 28th November at 8pm GMT. I was honoured to be invited to an exclusive listening party for Steven Wilson’s new Dolby Atmos mix of the Who Are You album last night in London. It’s the first time I’ve ever been to an event like this, and to hear the album in that way was something special.

We were then treated to a Q&A with Matt Kent, Richard Evans, Steven Wilson and Jon Astley, hosted by Matt Everitt from BBC 6 Music. Lots of funny and interesting stories were shared about the making of the album, the subsequent tour with Kenney Jones and John ‘Rabbit’ Bundrick, and the process behind the new Super Deluxe Edition.

It was great to meet (for the first time) Matt Kent, Richard Evans, Judy Astley, Dave Lewis, and Pat Kent and his mate Steve, and also see Andy Neill, Gary and Melissa Hurley, and David Stark again.

All in all, it was a fantastic evening, and I hope you all enjoy the new versions of Who Are You being released today.

Happy weekend all!

Paul

We couldn’t just celebrate My Generation’s 60th birthday today…

We also have to celebrate the forthcoming release of the Who Are You Super Deluxe Edition, and we’ve done this with a new YouTube video featuring the set being unboxed and discussed with Matt Kent, who not only wrote the liner notes but also helped compile the tracklisting

Enjoy!

“How do you write your epitaph at 19 years old?”

We’re celebrating the 60th anniversary of the UK release of The Who’s third single, ‘My Generation’, on this day in 1965 in our latest 60th Anniversary Special episode, available exclusively to our Talking About The Who Members, alongside a video extract of the episode on YouTube

Paul Bearman and Bets Crockett look at the impact of writing the words, “I hope I die before I get old”; The Who’s new status as the most exciting live act in the UK at this time; Pete Townshend moving to Belgravia at Kit Lambert’s insistence and becoming inspired to write the song; how the song permeated through The Who's later material; the lead-up to the infamous Aarhus show and Roger Daltrey’s firing from the band; Pete’s drunken encounter with Steve Jones and Paul Cook of the S*x Pistols in 1977; John Entwistle’s iconic bass solo; and how The Who dealt with ‘My Generation’ being an albatross around their necks

**NEW EPISODE OUT NOW**

In our Season Two finale, Colin Dawson — lead vocalist with The Detours, the band that would eventually evolve into The Who — talks about receiving an OBE for services to British tourism; being on first-name terms with Princess Diana; getting started in music and playing guitar in his first skiffle band; first meeting Roger Daltrey in a café in Acton; the formation of The Detours; being inspired by Cliff Richard and taking pride in his appearance on stage; his memories of playing with The Detours and why he eventually left the band; hearing ‘I Can’t Explain’ for the first time; covering a Who song in a different band decades later, and the Who songs and albums he likes the most; his son playing bass for Joy Crookes at Glastonbury earlier this year; and reuniting with Roger, John and Pete at the Royal Albert Hall in 1989.

Available on all good podcast apps and via the Acast link below

You can also watch an extract of the episode on our YouTube channel, and TATW Members can listen to a bonus episode featuring more of our conversation with Colin. Hello, Paul here.

Just dropping in to let you all know that tomorrow sees the release of the final episode of Season Two, featuring Colin Dawson of The Detours as our special guest. As always, it will be available on all good podcast apps, as well as a short video extract of the interview being available on YouTube. And if you’re a TATW Member, you’ll have the ad-free version of the episode, plus a bonus episode featuring more of my conversation with Colin (click the link below to sign up).

In the meantime, I thought I’d share this photo that my mum recently discovered and sent me. This is me, five years old, holding my copy of ‘The Who – Rarities Volume 1’, which I still own, and which remains one of my favourite Who compilations (along with Volume 2!).

Maybe I need to recreate this picture as the 45-year-old that I am now?
