Funny how some people think I'm a pushover at work. Like, hello? I'm all about learning and growing, but I'm not gonna waste my time on something that won't teach me anything new.

I'm the girl who lives and breathes by the company handbook. Guidelines? Policies? I know them all! And don't even get me started on admitting mistakes – I'm all about learning from them and getting better.

Criticism? Bring it on! Conflict? I can handle it. I'm not afraid to speak my mind. But let's be real, I also enjoy a little office gossip every now and then. I mean, a girl needs some entertainment, right? 😉

I vividly remember that first day back in school, exactly eight years ago today, in 2018. I was pursuing my graduate studies, a decision fueled by the inspiring stories of successful business leaders, many of whom were immigrants who came to the United States seeking better lives, pursuing higher education, and achieving incredible success.

One particular meeting stands out vividly. The managing partner shared his personal and professional goals for the year, outlining his aspirations with passion and clarity. He then invited each member of the management team to do the same. Everyone articulated a clear vision for their future, whether obtaining professional certifications or pursuing new ventures.

Traditionally, we are taught that the path to success is paved with degrees and traditional jobs. However, witnessing these driven individuals, some without formal degrees, achieve remarkable success challenged my assumptions about conventional wisdom.

In March of 2017, a reader told me that I was an organizer and planner and needed to find a job in the business field in coordinating. In February 2021, a different reader told me I needed to pick a legitimate career and play it safe. I won't survive in becoming an entrepreneur. And in the most recent reading, the reader said my career will take a turn and bloom.

All my life, I have been aiming for the American Dream of getting an education and finding a well-paying job. I understand that I am not landing these jobs because I lack interviews. I am trying hard to get past these interviews, but someone else is always better at selling themselves than me.

I didn't pursue higher education immediately after high school. Instead, I began working at a casino, a job I quickly realized was a dead-end. Limited growth, repetitive tasks, and a grueling shift schedule – including mandatory weekend work with no call-outs allowed – left me feeling drained and unfulfilled. After three years of minimal savings and a pathetic outlook for the future, I knew I needed a change.

I decided to pursue my higher education goals. Returning to school as a non-traditional student, older than my classmates, presented challenges. Based on my placement assessment, I faced setbacks, including having to remediate in both math and English. However, I remained determined. By taking a full course load of 18 to 21 units per semester, I completed both my associate's and bachelor's degrees within 4.5 years.

What unexpected challenges did you face when returning to school as a non-traditional student, and how did you overcome them?

I started working when I was sixteen, eager to contribute. I landed a position as a Market Interviewer at Market Facts, later known as Synovate, where I spent nearly two years. Before that, I recall my cousin working at McDonald's. I tried to follow in her footsteps, but my interview attempts proved unsuccessful. I applied to numerous fast-food chains, even canvassing restaurants in person to meet managers, but to no avail.

Interviews have always been a struggle for me. My nerves often get the better of me, leading to stutters and those dreaded "brain farts." Despite careful preparation, I consistently felt unable to present myself effectively. This anxiety also led me to steer clear of sales roles.

It wasn't until my early thirties that I finally landed a part-time position at a fast-food restaurant. But that's a story for another time.

I used to feel like I was drifting along a small boat in a vast ocean without a compass. I'd chased after degrees and careers that felt hollow, and I was starting to believe that my best days were behind me.

Starting over at 39 is challenging, and I hope it is gratifying. They say it's never too late to pursue your dreams and find your true purpose, but what if I don't believe I have one?

I am tired of going above and beyond for a job that doesn't appreciate me. I found it nearly impossible to get promoted. The ageism I faced was disheartening. It seemed everyone was looking for younger candidates, dismissing my years of experience.

Of course, I am feeling lost and frustrated. I turned to online courses and tutorials. I started learning about digital marketing, which seemed both exciting and accessible. Despite my initial skepticism, I was drawn to the idea of building a career from the comfort of my own home. After many days and weeks of researching digital marketing, I finally purchased a master resell course. I wasn't surprised at all. What I learned from my research was similar to the digital course. The only difference is that they have everything you need laid out for you, and you don't have to do all the hard work of researching anything. They said to trust the process; the process works. They also said you must put a lot of effort into it.

I started this digital marketing back in March of 2024. I had some views, and multiple scammers contacted me to hire them for marketing. Still, I got discouraged because I wasn't a social media person. I restarted again in August through September, but my algorithm changed due to inactivity. No matter what I did, I couldn't get any views, likes, or comments.

And here I am, giving it a try again for the third time this year. Hopefully, this time is different.

2024 is the Year of the Dragon, and dragon years are supposedly prosperous. However, I am so glad that 2024 is coming to an end. It simply wasn't a good year for me. I had a significant life event happen in 2023, and I thought that was challenging enough. This time last year, my anxiety was sky-high, and I didn't understand why. Throughout 2024, I constantly felt unwell, experiencing digestive issues, paranoia, and numerous sleepless nights. I had many "zombie days" where I didn't want to get out of bed and other times, I couldn't bring myself to go to bed. I was a mess!

I knew 2024 would be different for me because I would become an empty nester in the second half of the year, and I wanted to keep myself busy when the kids were out of the house. I decided I needed a career change, which led to numerous interviews, but I couldn't land a new position. I dived into digital marketing, but that didn't work well. So, here I am, still hoping and praying for something exciting to happen to me.
