So, people are asking - "If you can build big stadium systems, why aren't you doing more of that?"(Imagine that in the brattiest voice you can think of...) First off, when you are the Project Engineer for a job that size, you have no life. So then, if you decide to take your lumps and work the job, then all the other things had better make it worth it. Well, the company I partnered with went through a management change and forgot all the promises they made to me and at that point, I was not willing to take the lumps. Just not worth it. I still have a good relationship with the stadium itself and there are other companies to partner with. If another good situation comes around, I will be there. Meanwhile, I have a great network of partners and my own clients I work with. Plus, I have time to play music and work with local artists. I am currently wood-shedding my double bass chops. Maybe this year's Christmas video will be a little heavier? Hmm...

New Mac day!

Cell phone recording of my mix is pretty good. Big phat snare. This is it! This is what I bring to the party. Then it's gone!

Alright! Good bands + good equipment = a good day! Thanks to Parker Systems for sending me out today.

I have a bad habit of dropping pictures out here and not talking about them. Yesterday, I showed up early and worked with this church tech team to take out the analog audio console and put in their new Presonus digital console. We setup all the mixes for house, monitors, and streaming and then the band showed up to run through some songs. I was able to dial in the house and monitor mixes and then, after the band left, I used a multi-track recording to fine tune and set up a live stream mix that works. The service this morning went very smooth and everyone was happy with the sound. Makes me happy!

I will go back to do a day of training in a week or so. On that note, I know there are tons of "how-to" videos online, but I have been thinking about setting up some "hands-on" training sessions. If anyone is interested in that, let me know.

This topic came up in conversation, so I thought I might just make a quick post about it here. The Christmas videos I make are 99.5 percent live recordings. I am not "miming" on video. I am actually playing. My process is this: I record each instrument several times (5 or 6 takes. Not 80...) while recording video the whole time. Then I decide which take I like the best and I bring that audio and video take together into the main files. From there, the audio is mixed in ProTools and the video is edited with Wondershare. So, they are all actually live takes - I am playing what you hear. So why did I say 99.5 instead of 100%? Well, the truth is , sometimes I will hear a small piece of a take (like a single measure or less) where I thought I played better on a different take. So, I will cut in that small piece of audio from a different take. This is called "comping" and has been around forever. Some people use it heavily. But, I use it very sparsely because it causes the video to not match the audio at those points. So, if you watch carefully, you will see these tiny moments where the hands and the sound are not exact matches. Overall, though, I feel like I have stayed well within limits to be able to say that the videos are authentic. Any thoughts or experiences with this?

This picture popped back up. It was one of those "Show up and be useful" kind of days that turned into, "Hey, while you are here, do you know anyone that plays upright bass?"
Simple part, but I'm in tune and my tone is good! Even on the chromatic stuff.
