As we get ready to roll out a new website to reflect how we have evolved,
WE ROLL THE CREDITS ON OUR MENTORS.
My first broadcast mentor was GLORIA CLYNE, NBC's first female page hired in 1944 as a "guidette" during the war who spent 55 years with the Peacock. To a bunch of lucky college kids, Gloria was the boss during a summer internship at WNBC-TV's "Action 4 Consumer Unit", fronted by Consumer Advocate and Activist Betty Furness. We were Consumer Economics majors at Cornell (Go Big Red!). I was determined to be the next Ralph Nader but got bitten by the communications bug under Gloria's tutelage. Glo was a tough cookie with her own sense of fashion and a Royal manual typewriter that couldn't keep up with her. She was also known for her great legs. Yes, danced at the Roxy Theare- and showed off her gams at our wedding in 1996 on Governor's Island. Yes, we got her life story. What a life she led! No regrets! Gloria died in 2011. Few knew how close we were. She is up there dancing up a storm while reading somebody the riot act. R.I.P. Thanks muchly, as you used to say. I carry your wisdom in my head and love for you in my heart.
